Total Money Makeover

I just finished reading Dave Ramsey's book entitled Total Money Makeover. My aunt sent it to us as one of our wedding presents. It's a book that teaches you the steps to becoming debt-free and eventually letting your money work harder than you do.

I HIGHLY recommend it to all of you, esp since we are all young newly weds and in the process of buying houses, starting families, etc. This is seriously a life changing book, my DH and I read it together and we learned so much! We are starting the first of the month on a new budget and our "debt snowball" worksheet and we should have all our debt (including school loans and credit cards) paid off in about 6 months!

Re: Total Money Makeover

  • That's so crazy you posted this! DH and I just put our debt into spreadsheets to see our total debt was and what our action plan should be. I will have to check out that book and see if we can get any extra tips!

I was just checking out my credit report and I have 2 negative accounts from med bills that my mom was supposed to pay for back when I was a teenager but somehow they ended up on my report when she never paid (it was her insurance too...never figured that one out) I know I ended up paying for them and closing the accounts, which it says it is closed on  my report, but when I research my report further it says they are still open and not paid...I am confused and pissed because it's Sunday and cannot call to talk to anybody about it because they are closed!

  • That is really frustrating!! You should def. read this book!

I really need to get a credit report done. I havent done it in a few years and it'd be nice to see what my score is.

  • I love this book, and his newsletter.

I recommend it to anyone who openly mentions any money trouble.  Unfortunately, too many of my friends like to sit back and complain about their finances instead of doing the work to get out of debt.

  • since we are all young newly weds and in the process of buying houses, starting families, etc.

Well, actually, some of us are old newlyweds who already bought houses and have children old enough to get married themselves.  ;-)

  • Is it more than "stop buying coffees at Starbucks?"  I'm SICK of ridiculous tips like that.  If you can't figure out that expensive coffees are easy to cut out of your life, you have more than just money problems. :)

Every time I see a headline of "ways to save" or "save $100 each month," I always look and the tips are the same.  And it's always things that I already do or that don't apply!  I want some REAL tips!

  • My DH is the financial brain in the family, and he swears by the book "Your Money, Your Life". It takes a longer-term view of things, and explains all different ways to save and invest, etc. It also lays out pretty bare how what you spend your money on reflects your personal values (as an individual or as a couple).

  • Me in the H are working on this plan as well.  It's hard to keep putting every little extra cash into bills instead of clothes, but it's really working.  We started in June and so far we have our emergency fund and have paid off 4 credit card bills.  It definitely will take us more then 6 months to pay everything off, but little by little we are on are way to be DEBT FREE, and it feels so good!
