It's pretty simple...the mayor talks a bit, then the town's Australia Day person talks a bit (lol he did have a title but I can't remember what it was). Then you all stand up and say the pledge together - after that, you are called up one by one to receive your certificate and your native plant (I didn't know, but they give you a tree or some other plant and you're supposed to plant it at home...hopefully mine won't die lol). Then we had a group photo taken for the newspaper, and then had morning tea.

All in all, we were only there for about an hour - that included probably 15-20 minutes before the ceremony started, and another 15-20 minutes of tea afterward. Oh, and they have all of the new citizens enroll to vote. Smile

I'll be a dual citizen - the USA doesn't really like it, but they do allow it. Smile

  • Ahhh good to know, thanks!

Lol @ hoping your native shrub won't die. I can see the headlines now "New Aussie lets plant die....now she really IS one of us".

Josh is curious about the test, was it tricky or pretty straight forward?

He holds dual citizenship right now with the US and Canada so he will be giving up his US passport. His dad swears he can hold ALL three passports (Aussie, Canadian and US) at the same time and we keep arguing that, no, this is not the case lol. He won't be told...

I have the worst black thumb EVER! My plant killing skills are absolutely legendary. So I'm not really holding out hope for the poor little thing lol.

The test is pretty easy, really. I probably could have passed it without even studying, although I might have missed one or two of the political questions (just the phrasing of them was a little odd, and I had to sit and think about them for a second). But if he reads through the book they send you a couple of times, he should do just fine.

Some of the questions are common sense (like I remember one was something like "how should you treat fellow citizens" or whatever, and of course the answer was the one about respect and equality), others are about the political system or Australian culture (there were two sports questions that I can recall). But the exact questions he gets will likely be different than mine since they're selected randomly from a pool.

While I was at Medicare taking the test, there were two other people there as well - one (I think she was Czech?) passed it, and the other one failed (she barely spoke English so I'm not surprised that she had difficulty with some of the questions - I felt so bad for her though, she went away crying).

  • Aussie!  Aussie!  Aussie!

Hurray for becoming a citizen!  Now go enjoy a cuppa (wait, do they say that?) with some bikkies.  Or a hot chokkie, if you like.  Maybe some lollies.  Smile

  • Yay, congrats! =)
