Frustrated job hunter(vent)...ugh

Ok first of all I'm venting here because I'm pretty sure if I blow up at DH one more time he'll divorce me before our 90 day mark, lol.

I'm used to being a really busy person and since the move from FL (not working currently) I'm out of my element staying at home. Plus, it's so cold that I have no motivation to go out for any reason ;-)

There are no reliable job sites it seems like!!! If I get one more "scam" job interview off career builder I'm going to freak. Job hunting is the pits. I have a degree and I have work experience but almost too specific. I think my work history is a little all over the place for a 27 yr old...sigh, so frustrating!

Ok that's better...a little.

Re: Frustrated job hunter(vent)...ugh

  • Have you considered volunteering to at least get you out of the house and keep you busy?

Sorry the job search is not going well. Have you looked at jobs with the federal government? Not sure if there is anything in your field or area, but the website is reliable.

  • what jobs are you applying for that are scams?  i've applied for several on CB and haven't had any issues with them.  stay away from the "entry level" category.

    what is your background in?

This is a good suggestion and might lead to a job. Either way you'll definitely make some new contacts.

  • MH found his job off of monster.com.  He did get a lot of calls for jobs that were commission only, but obviously wasn't interested in those.

  • I feel your pain, I relocated a month ago & have only gotten one call for an interview out of the hundreds of jobs I've applied for. I have to agree, the job scams are the worst part. Praying on unemployed people looking for work is pretty cruel Angry

  • My DH said these websites (esp. indeed) were better for him than monster or careerbuilder

    http://www.indeed.com/
    http://www.simplyhired.com/

  • I also wanted to add that you might have better luck going to the websites of individual employers. It can be time consuming to search through the individual websites and then fill out their respective forms, but I do think you find jobs that you might not otherwise be aware of and the websites probably get less foot traffic so you might be in a smaller applicant pool. You can find a list of RTP companies on this website: http://www.rtp.org/main/

Also, have you checked for jobs at the universities in the area?

  • Have you signed up with any recruiters? I know the job market is really tough right now, but a recruiter may at least give you some direction and help get your foot in the door somewhere.
  • I think the other nesties have all given you some sound advice, but I think "most" of us on here, at one point or another have either felt your pain or are feeling the same pain as you.  I know I totally understand--and yes, I went on a scam job interview myself--and yeah, I felt dirty leaving the office--but at least I left--it's amazing that some folks actually think those are viable job opportunities!!  Let us know if we can help in any way!!

  • Are you on LinkedIn? I have learned that it's not what you know, it's who you know. After getting my masters, I job-searched for 4 months, applying online, talking to recruiters, nothing.. it was super frustrating, until I happened to talk to someone I graduated with who had had an "inside" email passed onto him about a job opening at my current company. My classmate thought I'd be a good fit. I emailed the guy it came from and was very pushy for an interview, lol. 2.25 years later, here I am. So I'd get on LinkedIn and connect with as many people as you can, see if it leads somewhere... Im also a member on LinkedIn of the alumni group at UNCC so I sometimes get notices from other alumni about job openings, etc, see if you can connect with yours? It might help, hey anything helps really. Smile  Good luck!!!
  • Thank you so much for the suggestions. Yea I do need to get back out and volunteer. I was very active back in FL and that will probably help a ton. The scams were "marketing" jobs lol...door-to-door sales basically.

Anyhow, my background most recently was 3 yrs in back office investments for Bank of New York. I loved it but what i did was very specific and difficult to find up here. Before that I have management and sales/marketing experience. I also have event planning with a non profit organization that I worked for for a while. So I'm a little all over the place I'm trying to fit my resume to make sense for anything at this point.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to check those other web sites and see if I have better luck.

  • I second using LinkedIn as a resource. I got laid off last year in January and it was a great tool in helping me figure out where I had connections to certain open positions. GL! As a recently unemployed jobhunter I know firsthand how frustrating it gets!
