XP:Has anyone worked as an Indep. Contractor? Also, accountant recs needed.
I'm doing this side job for a local law firm and they're paying me as an Independent Contractor. I'm a bit confused about the whole estimated taxes thing, is there anyone out there who's done this before and can provide any guidance?
Also, can anyone recommend an accountant? I want to talk to one about this, to make sure I do it correctly, and we'll also need to use one for our taxes this year. Anywhere on the East side would be fine.
Thanks!

I am a quarterly payer. I use mellot and mellot downtown. You can call and see if they do what you are looking for. Not real sure what your cost will be. They do all of my family's and the company's taxes and it is all one big invoice. To save cost you might want to find a small independent firm. Also google info about 1099s. There might be more about that then estimated payments.
If you are working as an independent contractor, they will issue you a 1099 statement around the same time as you'd get a W-2. If you've done work for them in the past, an accountant or tax professional can tell you what your estimated quarterly tax will be and give you the pre-printed coupons to pay it. However, if you haven't done the work before it will be hard to do your estimated taxes and you'll end up paying when you file.
I had to pay my first year doing this because I only worked for 6 months in my current position, and since I started in the last half of the year we didn't estimate my taxes. We've been paying quarterly this last year though.
Sure, please do. Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that waiting until filing time to pay was an option. Either way, I want to make sure I'm either correctly paying estimated taxes, or setting aside the right amount to pay at filing time.
