Bah, I think I just botched a phone interview

The position isn't a 100% fit for me so that may be why I struggled a bit too.  I'm usually pretty good at interviews though so floundering was a crappy feeling.  I didn't do anything majorly bad, but overall it just wasn't great.  Ugh.

  • I hate that feeling.

I went on an interview last year and walked out thinking wow, I would never hire me.

  • Here's a story about my worst phone interview ever:

It was literally days after MIL passed away and I was in CT with all our families. The interviewer & I had been playing phone tag for some reason. She called my cell while I was out with my mom running errands in the middle of a terrible thunder storm. I don't know if it was because I was distracted by the whole situation or what. But I hung up on her. Twice. I think the lightning caused the phone to spaz, who knows really though.

I was also in a truck with my mom that must not have had a muffler. So much distracting noise and my poor mom was like "SORRY! I'll pull over!" and I couldn't keep my attention focused on the interviewer. I kept saying "Yes, thank you" and the interviewer was all "I'm sorry???"

My mom pulls over to get gas, leaves the keys in the ignition, and the "ding ding ding" starts going when she opens the door. She left the window open so all I could hear was traffic and her yelling at the gas pump to take her credit card. I could not even think. So whenever the interviewer would ask me a question, to "collect my thoughts" or whatever I was doing, I would go "hmm...ummm...do do doooo!" Singing on my interview!

Ugh, I felt awful afterward. We laughed about it though. And they called me back for an in person interview! But I didn't get the job. I must have fumbled even worse in person haha!

Anyway, you probs did much better than you think and it couldn't have been as bad as mine!

  • Oh my goodness, thank you for that story too, S :)  I'm supposed to find out in a week or so if a face-to-face makes sense, so we'll see.  I tried to make up for the botched answers by asking insightful questions instead, haha!

I bet you did fine! I think it really looks good when you have good questions for them. Let me know how it turns out!

  • Phone interviews can be tricky, its hard to get a read of how the interviewers are responding.  I once interviewed someone via Skype for a leadership position, and I think she was abroad with a bad internet connection.  There was at least a 10 second delay between when I would ask a question and when she would respond, awkward.

  • Aw, I'm sorry Rock, phone interviews are just awkward in general!
  • I'm sorry Rock.  I hope it all works out.
  • I'm sure you did better than you thought you did : )

I also have a fear that the company I bombed with has me on some black list and won't ever call me for another interview.
