Hi! This is my first time posting on here, so I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Jess, and I started out as a knottie (although, not a super active one). I just recently got married in October, so here I am!
Anyway, I just recently graduated college with a degree for teaching. I'm not looking to start my career until September, so I've been working part time and casually applying to places as I see openings.
Anyway, my friends and my hubby just informed me that I should probably find a hobby and that facebook apps are not a hobby (lol). After thinking about it, I've realized that I don't really get out of the house much as most of my friends are still in school and very busy... and working isn't really a place for socializing. So, I would like to take up a hobby, but I have no idea where to start!
I don't have a car, so it would have to be on public transportation. Is there anything that any of you do that you enjoy? Or anything you've wanted to start doing, but have been too busy to? I've been thinking about maybe a baking class, or a poetry group or something. I enjoy doing a lot of things, especially crafty things... and I'm looking for suggestions, especially with specific places to do the hobby!
Re: Hi! and looking for a hobby!
Hi, welcome to the board!
Are you looking for hobbies that will help you meet new people? Because I was going to say knitting or crochet because they've been my latest obsession but I mostly do it solo. You could take a class and maybe join/organize a Stitch & B*tch GTG, but otherwise it's more of an individual thing and won't necessarily get you out of the house.
What about sports? I enjoy rock climbing, though it's been a while since I've done it since I don't live close enough to a gym to go regularly. You could do bouldering if you don't have a partner to belay you on the regular wall.
You could take any number of classes, like yoga, martial arts, pottery, beading, photography...any kind of class would get you out of the house!
Yes, I am looking for something to do to socialize... and I've thought of taking a number of classes, but I have no idea where to start looking! I was hoping that perhaps some people could come up with specific classes in specific places, or places to start my search.
For group activities, I do yoga, volunteer at an animal rescue, and a couple of book clubs. All of them are outside of Boston, but I'm sure you could find a book club at the public library, a good yoga studio, and volunteer opportunities in the city, if any of that interests you. Also, maybe look into taking a noncertificate class at a community college or community center. A couple of my friends are taking an ancient language writing class in a few weeks at an art school (can't remember the name, sorry!).
Hope that helps! And congrats on your marriage!
I am not sure where you're located but the Cambridge Center for Adult Education offers a lot of classes (dance, wine tasting, crafts, investing, etc). I took a salsa dancing class there and it was a lot of fun. I think there's also a Brookline center for adult education.
Oooh I'll have to look into the Cambridge Center. I'm located in Medford, but anywhere I can get to by T is fine with me, as far as travel goes. Although Cambridge would be perfect since I work there.
Also, one of my friends just told me about meetup.com. She does a lot of groups through there, so I'm currently browsing through that as well.
Welcome! The Boston Center for Adult Education also has tons of classes.
Welcome! Congratulations on your wedding and marriage. Everything I was going to mention for hobbies has already been mentioned so I can't help much there.
I'm not sure what kind of work you are doing at the moment but I wanted to suggest that if you have the transportation available you may want to think of subbing in some schools this year. If you sub you get to know a building and see if it's a good fit for your style of teaching. Also, if the people in the building know and like you then it often gives you a leg up during the hiring process because you aren't coming in cold off the streets. Another bonus is that you can pick up some ideas from lesson plans that you may choose to use in your own classroom. I taught in Virginia for a few years and then when I came up here I couldn't find a job so I subbed. I found that subbing gave me a ton of connections and lots of ideas that I still use in my classroom now.
The tech high school near me and community college both offer classes for adults. Everything from cooking or baking to salsa, and web design. Michael's offers crafts classes. I considered taking the cake decorating one, but have not.
You could sign up for yoga, zumba, or pilates classes. Join a gym and take a small group personal training.
Take a foreign language class - one of those intensive ones.
Those are some ideas, hope they help.
Welcome!
Cambridge Culinary has some pretty awesome looking cooking classes that I have always wanted to take. They would be especially good if you are interested in baking!

I think knitting is pretty social. I'm in a SnB, and we meet every Wednesday until the Barnes & Noble cafe kicks us out at closing. But I live in Worcester, and don't really know how to find SnBs near you. I know there are a couple listed on meetup.com, but I think they charge to come to their GTGs. You might get info at a yarn shop, or if you actually do want to learn to knit, you could join ravelry and find the Boston people and see what info they have.
I take pilates and zumba, partially as a way to meet new people after moving here last year, and that hasn't really worked well, but since I enjoy the class itself, it's fine. Maybe you can find a cooking class or book group- but I don't know how to find such things.
?Good luck, though! I hope you find something fun.?
