Re: does anyone pay for insurance out of pocket?

  • I should be Embarrassed But I haven't repurchased it yet. I was paying about $140 a month for horrible coverage, with a high prescription deductible (my allergies kill me when it comes to insurance). The one I'm going to get is going to cost me about $200 a month and covers pregnancy, but it's through the state bar insurance trust, so limited to members of the Texas Bar.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I pay $103 per month.  I have a high deductible disaster type of medical insurance though since that is what I mostly need coverage for.  I have zero coverage until I have spent $3000 out of pocket.  At that time, I am covered 100%.  So really, if you do the math, it is actually a pretty good deal.  In any given year, the most out of pocket expense I will have is $4236, which works out to be $353 per month.  That will only happen if I have a disaster resulting in $3000 in medical bills.  I have no pregnancy coverage but that is not necessary for me.  Anyway, I digress...
  • Yes.  My husband is currently at a contract job position, and we pay $1K out of pocket for us and 2 children.

This made me a little ill. I won't complain about my rates ever again!

  • We pay about $400/month for major medical for all three of us. It doesn't include maternity, but other than that, it's fairly reasonable for what it includes.
  • We used to pay about $400 / mo. for DH's COBRA.

  • why don't any of these policies cover maternity?  is that something you chose to do because of cost?  the whole reason i'm switching is to get a better ob (see previous post..."doc vent").  crap.  i might be stuck.  this health care system HAS to change.

From my insurance shopping (mostly on ehealthinsurance.com), it looks like pregnancy coverage is an option on only a few plans, is mad expensive, and you have to have the coverage anywhere from 12-24 months BEFORE you get pregnant.  Private insurance is not baby friendly.

  • Just wanted to say that our insurance is through dh's job. We can't get private insurance because no one will insure us. No one. If you want private health insurance get it before you are ever sick with anything!
  • If you get a maternity insurance rider, they typically won't take effect for 2-3 years after you have paid premiums on the insurance.  Not worth it at all IMO.  If you are able to get Scott&White insurance, it's probably your best bet, since they don't have any restrictions on waiting for your maternity benefits to take effect.  I tried to apply and was denied.  Still not sure why, they never sent a letter they said they were suppose to in an email.
