box hair color?

i'm contemplating coloring my hair this weekend to cover up my highlights that are growing out. i've never attempted to color my own hair though and i'm nervous! i guess i can always go to the salon to fix it if it turns into a disaster.

recs for brands to use? tips/suggestions?? Smile

Re: box hair color?

  • I'm partial to Garnier Nutrisse for at-home color. It's got some really good conditioning elements and doesn't leave you smelling horrible.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • i like/use natural instincts.  i had a bad experience with nice n' easy.  it was neither nice nor easy.  i chose dark brown, and my hair came out BLACK.

  • I use the Natural Instincts semi-permanent stuff.  I like it.

Ditto.  Plus, it's a great choice for a first timer...pretty impossible to mess up.

Castings Color Spa would also be good--I believe Ulta carries it.

  • go to a beauty supply place and ask for advice.  the bottles are only a few bucks, you'll just need to buy the developer, and gloves + bottle (if you don't have any).  I like the clairol brand at sally's.

also, don't leave it on as long if you are afraid it's going to turn out too dark.  I usually only leave mine on for 15 min or so, I think it recs 20 min.

Just had this experience tonight.  I wish I would have read this before I colored my hair.

  • Ditto the semi-permanent stuff.  It's great to get you by until you are brave enough to try a permanent color and/or get to the salon for a new 'do.

  • You can try Avenue Five - which is a salon school. They have discounted hair color services. Make sure you ask for someone who knows about your hair color when you call to make an appointment. I have had good results and the price is right to have someone else color your hair. You can find monthly specials on Craigslist.org - Beauty services.
