Short Term Disability question

So when I am on maternity leave I am not going to get paid at all. Does anyone have any experiecnce with short term disability? I wanted to find out if I would qualify while I was out. We are saving right now in case I don't have any income during that time but it would be nice to not have to drain my savings. Thanks girls.

Re: Short Term Disability question

  • If your company doesn't offer std you should be able to get it through the state.  I was covered through my company so I had xx amount of weeks where I received my salary in full and then xx amount of weeks where I received 60% of my salary.  Then I also used vacation time (I got 6 weeks every year and didn't use any since I pretty much worked from home all last year), and took advantage of the parent leave act and had an additional 5 weeks of leave which was unpaid but covered under fmla.

     Check out this website.

  • STD was offered through my work.  I was able to receive 6 weeks (8 if I had a c-section).  The first week (if I wanted to get paid before it kicked in) I had to use vacation/personal time.  Then when the STD kicked in I got paid.  I don't remember the exact breakdown but I know it wasn't 100% of salary the entire time, more like 60 or 67%.

Because my employer falls under FMLA rules, I took an additional 6 weeks off unpaid (I could have used vacation time but preferred to "save" it just in case I needed to take days off for doctor's appointments and such.)

Also, my employer pro-rated my vacation/personal days, so that is something to ask too.

  • As long as your company has it then you should qualify. I got 8 weeks for my c-section. Does your company have an HR # that you can call? I called right around 20 weeks to get the paperwork done and set up so I wouldn't have to worry about it.
  • My company is tiny so we don't have an HR department or anything. I will ask my office manager about it. Even if it was only a portion of my salary that is way better than what I was preparing for. I get two weeks of vacation that i am also saving to get paid for when I am on leave. Thank you so much for the advice!
  • I also forgot that I need to have my doctor sign something too that said I couldn't resume work for 6 weeks or something like that.

If your company doesn't offer it, you should definitely look into whether or not the state covers it.  My understanding is that a small portion of each check is taken out and paid into the state std.  If your office manager doesn't know, the office manager at your ob's office might know who you can call to find out since she is probably the one to send all of the std paperwork with the doctor's signatures.
