20% more for plus size BM dress???

I'm in a wedding this spring and went to order my BM dress. They took my measurements and told me I needed to order a size 18, and that it would be 20% more than the list price since size 18 and above it's considered "plus size"

Is this standard? 20% extra seemed really high to me. I consider myself to be a fairly averaged sized person too... I know some BM dresses are sized small, but I usually wear a size 10 or 12. I expected to have to order at least one size up (am clealry not in pre-baby shape yet) but a size 18 seemed a little ridiculous. especially since the sample dress was a size 10 and it fit me everywhere except for the bust.

What do they do with clients who are actually plus sized??? There were only a few sizes higher than 18 available!

I'm wondering if they are just trying to gauge on alternations...  I ordered a size 16, Here's hoping I can squish my bewbies into it by the time May rolls around!

Re: 20% more for plus size BM dress???

  • That seems a little high to me... but if it fit everywhere but the bust you should be fine with the 16 because they should be able to alter a 16 bust to an 18 as most dresses have a 2 inch allowance in them?
  • I don't remember what it was but I know there was an extra charge for one of my bridesmaids.

And I'm normally a size 4 but they ordered my dress in a size 8.  So it seems not all bridal shops believe in vanity sizing.

Do you belong to a gym?  Weight training would help, especially chest, back and shoulder exercises (although at that point you might just as well toss in legs and arms to the rotation).

Also helpful for toning - yoga, pilates, push ups and squats.

  • I am not quite sure and can only really offer up what I have seen in past experience, but the 20% part for plus size sounds about right.  I used to work in a clothing store that sold regular and plus sizes, and plus sizes were almost always 20% more in price.

Also with the sizing it does seem a bit high, but one of the members of my wedding party normally wears a size 14-16.  She ended up having to order a 20, because of the way that the dresses fit.  Going from a 10 to a 18 does seem a bit much though, and also consider that they may want you to order the dress too big so you will have to have it altered (more potential $$$ for them)

  • NOT all dresses come with the allowance... learned from experience... as the maker of my wedding dress sliced horizontally into the seams of my dress all along the bust and bodice making it impossible to let the dress out... I had to hem my dress up a bit so I was lucky to have the same material the be able to add into it... Not a nice experience or good feeling to have "panels" added to my dress!

    Best of luck...
I am sure what the did was just wanted you to order a dress sized to the largest part of your body... insane they charge 20% for plus sized as well... so insensitive!
  • This sounds close to what my SIL was quoted at a local salon. She, too, opted for a smaller size and it fit great! Good luck! I, personally, am dreading the bridesmaid dress shopping I'll be doing soon.

  • That was the going rate when my sister got married and was trying to find a dress. At some stores they held dresses up to her (wedding dresses) and asked if she wanted to place an order. Indifferent
  •

I do find 20 % more to be a tad excessive!

I am normally a 14/16 and I was told I needed to order a size 22 for my bridal dress! I was annoyed and sad all that same time. There was only a $50 extra cost. So that was about 4% additional cost.

  • In every wedding I've been in, I have had to pay significantly more than the other BM's b/c I was plus sized. Same with my wedding gown, I think I paid an additional $250, then had to pay an arm and a leg to alter the top down b/c you could see down it...but I digress.

This is normal practice for specialty plus sized clothing. It's actually normal practice for regular plus sized clothing.

  • 20% is the norm. Plus size is considered size 14 and up.

  • Oh my... I am totally going through the same exact thing right now for my SIL's wedding. The smaller girls are sized at a size 16 and I am sized at a 22! WTH? I have to pay $50 extra for my BM dress... I like the dress and I'm not complaining but I think this is ridiculous. At regular stores, my size is 14-16. The manufacturers are dumb for doing this.

  • The BM dress I bought in 2008 had a size 18 skirt, it was extra for being plus sized, but I don't remember by how much. ?What I do clearly recall however, is the 6" of fabric we took out of each side of the skirt.

    UGH.?
