I had my GD test on Saturday, and knew my doc would get the results today. I forgot my cell phone at home, so all day I was hoping that I'd get home and there wouldn't be a message from him since they pretty much only call if it's bad news. But nope, there it was: "Hi it's Dr S., please give me a call about your GD test..." EFF. And yes, the result wasn't good.
I still have to take the longer Oral Glucose Tolerance Test to confirm, so it's not 100% definite yet...but my number was high enough that I'm pretty sure it's a done deal. (10.5 on the Australian/Canadian scale...I don't know how this number corresponds to the way it's measured in the USA, but a normal score is under 7.8, so it's not like I got a borderline result or anything.)
This isn't really surprising, or the end of the world - I knew it was a definite possibility with twins, so I'm not shattered...just bummed...especially because I chose today of all days to give bacon brownies a try, and now they're in the oven just mocking me with all their sugar! ![]()
Re: gestational diabetes for the loss :-(
Awwww hon, I'm sorry. That is a bit of a downer for ya
You'll have to talk to Lori about it when she comes up for air from Libby. Is there a board on here that could give some insight/support also?
Like you said, not the end of the world and from what you've said, it's not uncommon with a multiple pregnancy. You're over halfway there and once you get your diet down pat, time will whiz by. Before you know it, the bebehs will be here and the GD will most likely go away.
On the upside, I'm glad it's something manageable like GD and not pre-eclampsia or hypertension or something else that would mean bedrest (especially since hypertension was a worry for a long time - my blood pressure has been around 130/80 for nearly this entire pregnancy, until my last appointment when it finally dropped to something like 120/65, yaaay!).
Oh hon! I am so sorry. But you have the right attitude...acceptance. That was tough for me. You may find yourself going through the 5 stages of grief on this one...I did...but as you know, once I accepted it, it really wasn't as bad as I feared.
You can do this. Hopefully it will be diet controlled...but if not, the insulin shots are really not horrible either. Just do what you doctor and dietician says and if it's not working, the insulin really does make a world of difference.
And not all sweets are lost! I am not sure what plan you'll be on (mine is detailed on Pregosaur, if you're curious what I had to stick to)...but I had ice cream EVERY.NIGHT. from 28 weeks until L&D! I did have to cut back considerably on fruit (all juice for sure) as well as breads, pastas, etc. (which I lived on in the first tri).
If you want some support, check out the High Risk Board (there are other GD ladies as well as ladies pg with twins) and I am here for you 100% to chat, bounce off ideas, food tips, etc. You can do this! ((((HUGS))))

I have a chance, but honestly I'd be STUNNED if I passed! Normally that only happens if your first test is borderline - using Australia's system, where 7.8 is normal, borderline might be 8.5 or so...but mine was 10.5. So I think it's pretty likely that it will come back with a bad result again, unfortunately.
But even if I do have GD, at least a low-GI diet is healthy to do anyway, and not too restrictive, so it shouldn't be too horrible...that's a plus!
Ohhhh...bummer =/ Well, if a low-GI diet is not too restrictive and healthy then that IS a plus =P And these few months will pass soon and before you know it, your babies will be here and you'll be eating anything your heart desires! (I'm still anxiously waiting for that myself!)
You're actually 100% right! I plan to try to stick to this way of eating even now that my GD is 100% resolved (within hours of delivering, actually). It's healthy and smart...eat every 2-3 hours (3 meals/3 snacks daily)...combine carbs with lean proteins and healthy fats. Choose complex carbs more oven than simple carbs. Cut down on processed foods as much as possible. Controls blood sugar (most of the time...you might need insulin to override placenta hormones that affect fasting sugars)...and is a healthy way of eating. Also, incorporate 30 minutes of movement (walking, dancing, house cleaning) on most days.
The good thing about GD...if there is one...10-12 weeks to make this change in lifestyle. It forces you to stick to the plan whereas when some folks commit to changing their eating habits they stick to it for 2, maybe 4 weeks and fall off the wagon. With GD, that's just not an option (well for most GD moms...some are lame and don't care)...
You can do it! If you'd like I can email you my tips and meal/snack ideas.
