I have to get a NC license plate..How do i do that?

I looked on the NCDOT website and it is a little confusing. I just got my car inspected here in NC so it is good to go with that now what? What do I need to bring...I know this is asked a lot but I wanted to get this taken care of Friday since I have off. TIA

Well, unlike other states, NC actually sub-contracts out their license plate operation, so whereas you'd go to the DMV for your license and maybe registration, you go to the License plate office for your plate. Maybe google "NC License Plate office" and see what comes up. Sorry I'm not such great help--I've lived here for 4.5 years and since it's not something you do everyday, the details get fuzzy!

Take your drivers license, insurance information, proof of residency as well as your information from the inspection although thats already in the system I would take it just to be on the safe side! GL!!

Oh and money!! :-) My local DMV doesnt take debit cards - not so sure about where you are so be sure to take your checkbook as well!

I saw those places around town..so all i have to do is hand them my papers, the cash and they will hand me a new plate? and i dont have to go to the DMV..really? Do they have to mail me the plate or is it done right away? This seems crazy to me but way better then going to the dmv.

I remember having to show my NC license, provide the VIN number, a check for the fee, and proof of insurance. I remember I also had to provide the name of the company, address, and phone number for the financing company that owned the lien on the car at the time.

Oh yes that's right, had to show proof of NC address too

Yes! You walk away with a new license plate in your hand. If the title on your car is from out of state, you have to get that switched over to a NC title too. The license plate office I went to took checks & cash, but no credit cards. Be prepared to pay your property taxes on your car too!

I think you also need proof of registration, so grab that out of your car and take that in with you, too. Just google "license plate agency" and some should pop up.

I may be totally wrong here, it's been several years since I had to go through the process, but dont you get the registration with the license plate?

VC is referencing the current registration from the other state.
