This might be a dumb question... regarding snow

DH and I have been up here for about 3 1/2 years... we've only seen a few inches of snow TOPS each year.

They're calling for sleet on Friday and snow on Saturday. I know the weather people are *usually* wrong, but should we be preparing ourselves or something? My mind immediately goes into hurricane prep mode...

Is anyone else shopping today so you don't have to worry about driving in snow tomorrow or Saturday?

Re: This might be a dumb question... regarding snow

  • If you have no food in the house, get some. I try to avoid the roads at all cost with snow/ice/mix around here. Other than that, I wouldn't fuss with crazy preparations.
  • I agree with J&T - people get crazy when there is just a hint of snow in the air.  I would just go and do your regular shopping if you need too so you dont have to get on the roads if there is a wintery mix - I just love those weatherman terms!

  • I would agree that if you are low on food in the house to go ahead and do normal grocery shopping - the area is definitely capable of getting a lot of snow sometimes (and right around the end of Jan./beginning of Feb. is typically when we get our "big snows") but I wouldn't get too concerned about going into hurricane survival mode :)
  • We're planning on not leaving the house at all on Saturday because of the weather, even if it's just a little sleet, so I'm going to go over to super target and purchase some ingredients to cook dinner at home that evening, that's about it. I think people go way overboard and feel like they need groceries to help them survive being stuck in the house for a week or something. lol.
  • Agreed with PP

it's not the crisis people make it out to be, but it is nice NOT to have to worry about mucking around in the sleet/snow just to run errands

  • Here's the thing about NC snow - it's unpredictable.  COMPLETELY unpredictable.

You know the year we had two feet?  Up until it started snowing, they were predicting a couple of inches, max.

Or those times they predict snow, but we get a massive ice storm (which is far worse than snow, IMO).

Also, because it usually warms up during the day, any accumilation (sp, whatever) of snow will begin to melt, then re-freeze overnight making it even worse.

We typically just make sure we have enough food in the house for a week, enough dog food, formula, diapers, & batteries (in case of an ice storm & power outages).

  • I already needed to get a few things from Wal-Mart anyhoo but not because of the snow.
  • I'm totally worried about the weather as its my first on-call shift at the hospital Friday night and I'm terrified of not being able to get home Saturday morning!

  • I would make sure you have enough to get through atleast three or four days. NC snow is whacky. We may get very little and some ice glazing in the morning..or we may get dumped on like we did before Christmas, depending on where you are.

We are expecting 3-5 inches and last time they said that we got 7. I prefer snow to ice any day and they aren't sure how much ice we are getting.

The temperatures though should make it okay to get out Sunday during the day...but be careful with roads in the mornings for the next several days. I always make sure we have a big pot of soup (it can always be heated on the grill if we lose power) and sandwich stuff that doesn't have to be cooked in case we lose power.

For those that haven't lived her long, we've gotten hit with a few ice storms. In 96' we lost power for over 3 weeks. It was NOT FUN!

So take the mad rush by some with a grain of salt and I wouldn't go into full on Survival mode but it doesn' t hurt to make a quick trip to a store and organize some essentials. (Like Friday night I will be filling up the bathtubs and buckets of water in case we lose power since we are on a well and septic..I can flush toilets and have fresh water without power that way.)

  • *sigh*

I'm so jealous of you snowbirds.  On the coast we rarely get snow.  Boo.

You know, I've learned that if the weather guy predicts just a little snow or ice that means one of two things: a) There will be a little cold rain...maybe....or, b) There will be a massive ice/snow storm which they will deny is occuring until there's already a foot or more on the ground.

I typically make sure I have whatever I need to weather scenario b, but that's nothing more than regular grocery shopping for us.

  • Well, here's the good thing, I think there is far less actual devestation in a snow storm than a hurricane, AT.  So, like the PPers mentioned, if you are running low on some basic supplies, stop at the store and grab some stuff.

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where even if my road doesn't get plowed (which it didn't last time) we can still walk places for things--there aren't many cars on the roads in the first place, so its actually safer than normal.

    Yeah, I figured lol. :P

We're stopping at Target tonight to pick up some stuff we can just make on a grill, should the power go out.

We've lived through 8 hurricanes (maybe more lol)... so my mind just sort of immediately associates every possible weather issue with them. I'm not too worried, but I'm glad we'll be prepared.

Thanks for all the input, ladies!

  • As long as you have enough in your freezer/pantry to get you by a day or two, I'd say you're fine. I always wonder how little some people keep around their house if they have to run out to the store.

I often wonder that as well....especially since it seems like our refridge/freezer are "bare" compared to our even our single friends refridges...yet, we still rarely have to go out last minute for things...

DH and I go grocery shopping every Saturday or Sunday (depending on our mood) and we buy one week's worth of groceries.

Since tomorrow is Friday (and the sleet / snow predictions are for Friday and Saturday) we only have one or two meals left TOTAL in the fridge... so we would have to run out and go get some more provisions.

We also buy according to a planned meal... so we don't have a lot of stuff in the pantry for "anything" purposes.

I have friends that buy a bunch of stuff and live off of it for a month lol... I'm sure they wouldn't need to run out last minute.

I think it might just be the method in which each individual person shops.

This. We don't live in Alaska.

Im a total cynic in the CLT area because Ive been here 5 years and every time there is talk about snow I get so excited and then we get nothing or like, half an inch. Sad  So maybe one of these days I'll laugh at the forecast then be crying while stuck in my house with no power and not enough food. Doh! Make me a believer, weather gods!!

    Silly Terp.

It's not necessity.  It's CULTURE. Stick out tongue

  • I buy weekly groceries too (and also shop Sat/Sunday), but there are some things I always have on hand for quick meals that I don't use on a weekly basis and replenish when they are used.  Things like pasta/pasta sauce, stir fry veggies (frozen), or pancake mix that could make a meal if needed. Even with out those meals being available, I guess I just wouldn't care if I was scraping random stuff together to get through a few days, I'd rather do that than deal with the crowds at the store. I hate grocery store crowds!

You know, that's actually a *really good* idea. I think I will start accumulating some pasta and some other things that don't perish quickly for the pantry... if anything, I'll be able to put together a fast meal if I ever don't feel like grocery shopping on my normal day.

    Thanks, Terp :).

  • the only thing we did was go buy some more candles, our power lines are all above ground and every time we get ice, we're without power.  i thought it was a silly request from DH (we have several), but i did it anyways.

  • Yes, they definitely help stretch out days b/t grocery trips and there have been some weeks that I don't make it to the store at all and just get by with whatever is around.  Other pantry items I like to have are tomato soup & american cheese (for grilled cheese), frozen lasagna, Velveeta mac & cheese (not usually a meal, well at least not since college, but requires no ingredients), and gnocchi. I appreciated your thought on having foods you could stick on the grill since I hadn't thought about using the grill in a no-power scenario, so thanks for that!

  • We sometimes try to make sure we have things that do not require electricity or refrigeration just in case the power goes out. I think one of the biggest dangers is going out and driving around while it is snowing/icy since people get a little crazy on the roads. If it is icy there is not much they can do about, so the roads can be really slick.

  • Our "rule" is no trips to the grocery store unless it was a trip that would be made regardless of snow.  I refuse to be one of those crazies that thinks snow = grocery store panic.  It's just snow and most of us have everything we need at home to last a day or 2.
