Changing your passport

So I need to finally do this.

Do I really need to send my original copy of my marriage certificate?  Oh boy.......not sure how I feel about that.

How long does all this take?

Thanks guys!

Re: Changing your passport

  • I just sent my application a couple of weeks ago so you are not alone :-P. YEs, you have to send the original marriage cert. I believe they will mail it back. While I was at it, I also got the passport card. Not sure where I'll use it but I thought might as well get it Stick out tongue. I think it takes about 6-9 weeks. It should say in the website how long the processing will take.
  • I had to send my birth certificate as well, crazy!  But YAY, does this mean you'll come visit us? ;)  Btw, just send it registered mail and they will send it back to you registered mail as well.

  • Yes, you do have to send the original.  I think I got mine within 4 weeks.
  • Agree with pp on the original certificate (I made a copy--scanned it into my computer--for myself just in case). Mine actually took only 2 weeks to get back--I was really surprised but maybe it's because they just weren't that busy when I sent mine in, which was around October 2008. It was also something like $75 to process it. I thought that was kinda hefty for a name change =P

  • I still haven't done mine - I was lazy and decided to wait until this year, since it expires in Oct and I'd need to get a new one anyway. Stick out tongue
  • I did mine last April for a May trip...I expedited the process and it took like a week (downloaded the forms online and mailed them in...) As far as government hoop jumping it wasn't that bad, actually.
  • Yes, $75 is way too much to change a name.  This is my 3rd passport in the last few years.  NOT happy about that either.  I am the most anal retentive person when it comes to organization.  Like so much, I would consider myself a dork, nerd, etc.....whatever you want to call me.  HOWEVER, I lost my passport twice in the last few years and every time right before I needed to leave the country.  One time, I just threw it away.  Who does that?  Crying  So I am hoping this is the last time I need to make contact with the U.S. Passport folks.  Thank you guys for the heads up!!
