I have to brag, sorry.
I went to this area today (about 1.5 hrs away) that is apparently where most of the scallops in Japan are caught. I bought 3 kilos of live scallops for about $12. I came home, shucked them, ate them as fresh as they could ever possibly be eaten. It was rather entertaining to shuck them as they're still trying to snap shut on me
Of course, we had to do a duo prep. One was broiled in the shell with a mirin/pineapple/lime juice broth. The other was encrusted with coriander and sauteed in garlic which I deglazed with wine then turned into a sauce with milk, parsley, and lemon. Jealous yet?
It's one of the few perks of living where I live in the midldle of nowhere, snow country, so I'm thrilled to have it, at least until a few weeks from now when the snow shuts down the roads until April. I didn't like scallops until I moved here (and it was only recently that I tried them again). I'm afraid I'll not like them when I move. Please tell me I can find delicious ones in the States.

Re: AW to you foodies
Yum!
We have a fabulous, Michelin-rated sushi place near us, and one of our favorite things to order is fresh (raw) live scallops. Delicious!
