I need dog help please

We got a 2 year old dog from someone who was giving her away. The old owners paper trained her and let her sleep in their bed.  I want to transition her to a crate because I do not want her sleeping in our bed. My two other dogs are crate trained and go in the crate at night when they sleep and for about 2 hours during the day when DH leaves for work and I am on my way home. My other 2 dogs are not paper trained and go outside.  Do you think it will be hard to start training her to go into the crate at night to sleep and the 2 hours during the day when we are not home?    I have trained her to go to the bathroom outside but if she has to go to the bathroom the 2 hours we are not home she will go in the house.  I am just looking for a little help from people who have adopted dogs who were older and are set in their ways. Thanks so much sorry so long!

Re: I need dog help please

  • I didn't realize you had three dogs Jenny!  I have no advice for you because I have not had an older dog...but I bet Punky will have some good advice.
  • I knew someone on here had adopted dogs before.  I just don't want to do the wrong thing or train her wrong.  It is hard because she is older and already has her way of doing things. But yes three dogs now and a baby on the way haha.

  • I love dogs.  I have a feeling we are going to get a second one soon...he he he.
  • I love dogs too but I wanted my next dog to be a black lab. And I ended up with another chihuahua hahaha.

  • We got Simon when he was about 1 1/2 years old... I've never had a paper trained dog to have any experience/ advice for you but I would think she can learn to go outside/ be house trained. Simon was fully trained (house, crate)... but from what I understand about crate training, it should be doable.

Simon was crate-trained when he came to us and that lasted until we moved and now he won't go near it. He is completely fine outside of it though. Ask the pets board for advice though!

    Good luck!

  • Bless you for taking a dog from someone who didn't want her anymore!

You can crate train an older dog- I crate train all of my fosters- and they are anywhere from 8 weeks to 3 years old. Only 1 didn't take to the crate so that is a pretty good stat for me!  You have to crate train an adult just like she is a puppy- toss treats in there, reward and praise, build up time, etc.

Generally my fosters take about 2 weeks to "get it" and start enthusiastically running into the crate upon command within 4 weeks.

Crate training will help with that bathroom issue. Gross. I had a puppy from a shelter who was paper trained and I gradually moved the pad toward the door and eliminated it within a week. Sounds like you have her housebroken for the most part- but a crate will help her to realize she needs to hold it until you get home. Be sure you feed her in there too so that she associates it as her "den"- if she goes in it the first few days, just clean well and move on- it may take her a week or 2 to "get it".

    GL!!

  • Thank you punky for the good advice.
