Have you ever been "on call" for jury duty?
I received a jury summons for US District Court to be on call for the month of March. I have never served on any type of jury. The notice said starting Feb. 19 and until the end of March I have to call every friday to see if I am needed. So does this mean that even if I have been told to go one week and end up getting picked there is a chance that I could get called again for a separate trial once that one is over?
Re: Have you ever been "on call" for jury duty?
I would think if you get assigned to a trial that after that they'd sign off on the summons saying you'd completed your civic duty.
That sucks that for more than a month every Friday you have to do that. What a PITA.

Yup, you'll only get called up once.
I have a Grand Jury summons on Monday. I have to postpone (again) because I'm traveling, but it is going to catch up to me eventually. What does that mean? Oh, four hours a day for a month of jury duty. My only way out is if I can convince them I don't speak English. Awesome. I'll trade ya...

I know, I'd really like (and will have to!) serve eventually, but I'm rarely in NYC for a whole month. My travel schedule is crazy. I seriously think that I have something booked every month until July! I mean, if I have proof of plane tickets, they can't force me to serve, right?

Oh geez, I'm totally f'ed then. My plan was to burst into the courtroom, arms flailing, shouting "Erroneous! Erroneous! Erroneous on both counts!!!" So you're telling me I should revise this brilliant plan?

Living in California, one of our most litigious states, I get summoned for jury duty about every other year (three times so far). Once you serve, they can't call you for one year. Once, I called in and was told I wasn't needed. The other two times I had to actually go in (state criminal courts, but two different ones), waste a day (once, two days) and then they told me I wasn't needed. Picking jurors also takes a long time in CA because almost everyone has either brought or defended a lawsuit, and you have to hash it all out before they will accept or deny you (most of these are traffic incidences, go figure).
But to answer your question, yeah just keep calling. They'll either ask you to come in or tell you that you don't have to (hope for that!) but they can only get you once a year (unless that varies from state to state).
