So this morning I woke up with an eye redder than it has any business being...it was kind of nasty and it freaked me out, so I called my eye doctor and they said they were totally booked--but if I could come in and sit tight, they'd squeeze me in somewhere.
Figuring I'd be sitting there for a while, I took a book. I've been reading David Mendell's Obama biography (which for the record--is pretty unbiased so far. There's good, there's bad and it's very honest about the positives and negatives). Took the book with me, sat in a corner of the waiting room and read while I waited.
Kid you not--every single person, from the receptionist to the other people in the waiting room to then the doctor's assistant who walked me back to the exam room had something to say about the book or Obama himself.
Some were positive, some not so much. Others were more, "It's good to read about him cause like it or not, he's going to be our next president," and one girl launched into the empty suit "he's nothing but a communist" book. It was really interesting.
I just kept nodding to everyone and thinking, "I'm just reading a book. Just. reading. a book. Didn't ask for your opinion, didn't ask for your 10 minute diatribe, didn't ask for your 10 minute praise session. Can I just read in peace?"
I'm guessing if I want to read in peace, next time I'll grab a bodice ripper or some chick lit. No one ever comments on that, right?
All that said, it was still pretty interesting. Maybe next time I have to sit in a waiting room I should take the Palin biography. THAT's sure to get reaction too, I'm guessing...
Re: Note to self: Do not read political books in public
I get the same thing. I will sometimes remove the cover just to get people to leave me alone and let me read.
I practically live at Barnes and Noble like to sit and read political books. I get funny looks and comments all the time.
I'd like to read that Obama book. I'm open to anything really.
Oh, I'm reading this books called "Lincoln's Melancholy". It's a psychological analysis of President Lincoln. It is AMAZING!
