Well after much thought and prayer I have decided that I want to go to grad school. I am going to apply for the summer at UAB for the nurse practioner program. I am so excited about it!!! I feel like I finally have a plan for what I want to do with my life. I have already been offered a job after I complete school but I just don't want to live here. We really want to go back to Birmingham. But if worse comes to worse at least I know I have a back up. So so excited!!!!!!
So that brings me to my question. Have any of you ladies taken the GRE? And if so what did you use to study? TIA

Re: Grad school
congrats on your decision to take the plunge!!
that is awesome!! unfortunately i had no advice on the GRE since the prog i am in now didn't require me to take it. but my sis did. she just bought one of those study books, and studied out of that. she actually just started grad school at uab this fall (cellular and molecular bio - she's the genius of the fam - lol).
eta: i can get the name of the book she used if you would like.
YAY, congrats and good luck!!!
I had to take the GRE - hated it and am horrible at standardized test taking. Am MUCH better in the classroom. Luckily in my program they weighed your interview, prof experience and rec's MUCH more. And they have since thrown the test out as a part of acceptance into the program.
Funny - my mom's friend actually wrote her disseration on this in college - how those who do well on stand tests do not do as well in school and those that do not do well on stand tests - it is not a reflection of how well they will do in school or in their jobs. ha!!
I def suggest a study guide and there are prep classes you can take - it all depends on how you are w/stand tests......
I took the GRE about 6 years ago. I just got a study book and went through it.
For some reason, I did not do well on it. Like Aubie, my program looks at grades, professional experience, etc. I was really surprised at my scores though because I did fantastic on the ACT to get into college.
But, the GRE is just a different kind of test. Plus, I do better when taking a test on paper, not on a computer. In Tuscaloosa (and most places, I think) the GRE is given on a PC.
Congrats on the decision to go back to school! It really is worth it. I'm so glad I got my master's early before kids and all that. Good luck!
Congrats!! That is such a huge decision....and I wish you much luck
One of my dearest friends just got accepted to the CRNA program at Sanford! She ordered several study books for the GRE online! We also found a really good one at BAM! It had a cd in the back of mock test questions. She just read those books and took the mock tests on the cd's until she was blue in the face.....and she did very well
You can check at Amazon.com and you can usually find some study books that are used.....for cheap! Good Luck
Congrats on your decision to go back to grad school! I took the GRE January of this year. I used the Princeton Review study book. I really liked it. It tells you exactly what to expect and test strategies (which I needed - I'm not a good standardized test taker). I would highly recommend it.
It also comes with a code to take a free, full-length practice test online and a CD with practice questions (I think..it's either a CD or it was online too). Either way, I liked it. The book itself also has lots of practice questions. I think I bought it at Barnes & Noble, but I'm sure you could find it online too.?
Good luck!?
*rasies hand!!!* i have! LOL
it was many moons ago (or at least it feels like it) and my strategy was to focus on the areas that i knew i would score high in ...so i studied my head off for the analytical and english portions.... i had a book that helped me sutdy the most popular words and such for the english part, and i just remember the analytical part being a lot of fun (although at the time, it was still in the experimental phase or whatever, and i remember they weren't really using those scores for much of anything).
let me know if you have other specific questions and i will see what i can remember.... LOL
Congrats! DH and I are both in grad school right now. (He's in a doctoral program at UAB
He did great on the GRE, I hated it and didn't do well. Definitely buy a study guide though! And of course, everyone is different. I am sure you could do fine! It's heavy on alegbra and math that I felt I hadn't used in awhile, hence my problems.
My program also gave the option of taking the MAT (Miller Anologies Test) and it was waaay better for me, because math is my weakness.
Another tip-sign up early, so that you can take it a second time if you need to before the application deadlines.
