NER: Prescription Drugs

I am getting closer to leaving my job and that will entail switching to my husband's health insurance.  In order to keep monthly costs down, we would probably choose the plan with less coverage.  This means that I will have to shell out money for the retail cost of my prescription drugs (as well as most medical costs until I hit a maximum).  The difference between this plan and the better coverage is over $400 per month.

I currently take Singulair for a mild case of asthma.  Unfortunately, it does not have a generic available, so we're looking at $130 per month to maintain.  Does anyone have any ideas how I can pull that cost down?  Is there anyone else with a similar situation?  I have an appointment with my doctor in a week to see if I can even try going off of the medication to see how I do.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

Re: NER: Prescription Drugs

  • Is there a separate prescription plan you could join?  It seems like I see ads for them on tv... Let me use the google...brb
  • Check with your area pharmacies for prescription plans*.
  • You know, your doctor can some time point you in the right direction.  I actually didn't have any coverage when I first got out of college and I was on 50 mg of Zoloft and the doctor told me to get the 100 mg and split it.  That helped cut down on cost a little bit.

If you aren't picky about your asthma medicine perhaps he can offer you something that you can get in a generic.  Also, make sure you ask your doctor if he has any 'samples'.  I know some doctors that will give several months of 'samples' to you to help you offset the costs.

  • most of the plans you see advertised on TV are for assistance programs and your income would have to be very low to be eligible.

I'm a drug rep - my first bit of advice is to go to the singulair website and see if they have any type of rebate program you can sign up for. My drugs have them- and you can often get up to $30/month off for a few months in a row, etc.

Also- ask your doc if he has any rebates, too - since sometimes the docs get them from the reps.

Buy your drugs at Costco - they are ALWAYS the cheapest - by far.  I price the drugs I sell at many pharmacies- and costco is the way to go- you don't need a membership- just walk in and say "i'm going to the pharmacy".  If you do'nt have costco- sams or other type with a pharmacy would probably have similar low prices.

if you don't have a wholesale club- shop around prices.  Some independent pharmacies will even let you haggle with them to get the price down- most people don't know this- I do b/c pharmacists tell me.  THE WORST is Wallgreens/CVS and that type of chain- they always have the highest price- stay away from them.

if you have a FSA- take out a lot more money for it this year- that way it will come out pre-tax and you'll end up paying less for your meds, since you can pay with FSA money.  If you don't- remember to keep every receipt to deduct on your taxes for health care.

  • Thank you everyone.....

GoldiLocks....I have a friend who is looking into going into your line of business.  What are the positives and negatives?  Do you recommend it or do you suggest her looking elsewhere?
