AI Rec's Needed

DH and I are in the very initial stages of planning a vacation in Dec- the week before Xmas (the 13th I believe).  It is to celebrate both us completing our graduate degrees (MBA for me and JD for him).  Since I've heard about some of the amazing vacations you ladies have taken, I'm asking for your recommendations.  We don't have many criteria yet, but the AI needs to be somewhere tropical, have the opportunity to swim with dolphins and be somewhat budget friendly.  TIA!

Re: AI Rec's Needed

  • We spent 5 days at the Valentin Imperial Maya in Mexico. It's was beautiful, the food was really good, there are tons of things to do in and around the resort and the price was great! Check out cheapcaribbean.com for some good deals.
  • What about a cruise? DH and I did one a couple of years ago and really liked it. For the excursions, you can make them as cheap (no excursions) or expensive as you like.

We did Carnival and went to Grand Cayman (no excursion, just walked around the town), Cozumel (we did a ATV beach tour), Belize (horseback riding), and Honduras (Snuba diving).

  • Hands Down - Sandals.  We have been to Negril and Ochos Rios and LOVED them both.
  • We had a great time at Aventura Spa Palace in Mexico a few years ago.   Only drawback was that we had to go to a sister resort for a real beach, but we had a fantastic lagoon to use.  Not sure how far away the nearest swim with the dolphins thing would be.

We also went to Belize this year.  We went snorkeling on the reef and while there were no dolphins, we saw sharks, turtles, eels, and an amazing amount other wildlife up close.

  • I just saw this article, not sure if any of them are AIs though. I just glanced through it.

  • The only AI's I've stayed at are the Palace Resorts.  All of them were really nice, with great service.  I stayed at Cancun Palace and Beach Palace..but that was before hurrican Wilma and they've both been rebuilt.  Also stayed at Cozumel Palace which was really nice.

There are some great rates on resorts in Turks and Caicos where we went last summer, but they aren't AI's and I don't think they have anywhere on the island for swimming with dolphins.

  • We had a great time at the Sandals Royal Bahamian.

  • I really liked the Excellence Resorts we stayed in the Riveria Mayan

I would love to stay at The Royal  in Canun or Maroma both are very highly rated on trip advisor.
