Any advice

Hi Ladies

My dh and I are possibly moving to San Antionio in April.  We currently live in MN.  I know its totally different from MN.  We were looking at some houses on the computer and they are very reasonable.  Its going to be hard for me to move away from my family, as we also have a 14 month old.  What are the goods and bads about living in TX.  Please be honest.  I don't want to move and make a bad mistake, nor do I want to make the wrong mistake and stay in MN.

THanks

Re: Any advice

  • Summers are HOT.  Sweltering.  That's the only "bad" thing I can think of, though I don't know much about SA.

Good- lots of outside activities, no snow (mostly)/nicer winters, COL is reasonable.  Texas is awesome.  :)

    this, for sure!

the good: people are SUPER friendly here - anywhere from the grocery store to this board, people generally go above and beyond.  it's really nice!

there always seems to be something to do - at least in austin.  not sure about SA, you might want to ask that board if you want specifics.

GL with your move if you decide to venture out!

  • might want to post on the SA board too, since they'll likely have some differing opinions.  Austin is pretty different than San Antonio, so I wouldn't want all the Austin peeps to tell you how awesome it is here without you hearing about San Antonio specifically.

  • I've never explored SA, so I can't offer you any advice there.

But I did relocate from WI to TX (native midwesterner).  I LOVE Texas, adore Austin, and would be happy to stay here forever.  Yes, the summers are hot, but I'd take a long hot summer over the nasty winters up there any day of the week- no icy roads, no closures, no salt and ice caked car.  The late fall, winter, and springtimes are just gorgeous.  People down here are friendly, friendlier than the midwest, imo- more open minded and welcoming.  Being away from my family and college friends isn't always the most fun, but we fly to visit often and I love living here so much that it really outweighs my sad feelings there.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • DH lived in SA for about 2 years when we were dating.  SA is really growing and has tons and tons of new construction on the outside the loop.  The newer homes are huge and very affordable (even compared to Austin), but defineitly consider school zones if you're planning on using public schools.  DH's uncle got a 2200+ sf new construction home for less than150k - which is amazing.

Good luck with your move and hopefully you guys feel great about San Antonio before you make the move.
