Housewarming Party

I want to throw a housewarming party for my brother and his girlfriend who just put a contract in on a house that is being built.  We plan on having the party before they move into their house so it therefore won't be at their actual house, but the family wants to have one for them so we can give them some gifts for their new home.  We are only inviting close family and four close friends.

Any neat ideas as far as decor, food, things to do, etc.

Re: Housewarming Party

  • The idea behind it is sweet, but who wants to go to a housewarming when there's not yet a house to be warmed?  I'd wait to do it until after they close just in case they don't close and they've got presents for a house they don't have.

Many folks do finger foods on a weekend afternoon.

  • A housewarming party without a house is weird and tacky. It's basically a gift grab. Wait until they move in.
  • the whole purpose of a housewarming is to warm the house with family and friends...and so everyone can see the new place! Wait until they move in and then throw the party. (It's very sweet of you to throw them a housewarming, btw. )

  • I agree with the pp's, sweet idea, but housewarming = seeing the new house.  If people want to give them gifts before they move in, then they will do that.

It the family that is throwing it for them and they don't know about it so it isn't really a gift grab for them because they don't even know about it or expect it.  Only family is invited and its because we want to do something nice for them as a way of saying congrats.

I see what people are saying.  The family is throwing it for them together and are doing it because we want to.  We aren't inviting friends or anything like that for that reason.  Like I said in my post it is more of a congratulations party rather than a housewarming party.
