Last week, Dog had a very swollen face. He was Quasimodo Dog. Next day it was gone but he threw up all day. Next day, he was fine. All weekend, he was fine.
This morning, he threw up again and is going nuts all itchy. Licking his paws, nibbling on his back and scratching his neck.
WTF? The vet says I can bring him in for an anti-itchy shot. But has anyone's dog ever had something similar? I don't know what to expect.
He's on Blue Buffalo food, could it be an allergy thing? Does cedar bother dogs?

Re: ugh DOG
My dog only gets swollen if he gets stung by a scorpion. I just give him 1/2 a Benadryl (he's a dachsie) and he's usually fine. Do you have scorpions at your place? Or spiders? I heard their bites can be pretty nasty, too.
I've never had the throwing up/swelling/itchy, though, and he's pretty allergic to everything. He's on Blue Buffalo, too, and hasn't had any allergic reactions to the food.
My pittie had horrible allergies a couple of weeks ago. Hives (looked like ant bites) all over her back and hind legs, itching all the time, etc. She's had that before. This time, though, we woke up one morning and her eye was swollen. Like, really swollen, and the eyeball was red.
We took her in and I guess the allergy had gotten to her eye. They gave us stronger anti-histimine (we'd been giving her 3 benedryl twice a day), some spray that kicked major hive-ass, and ointment for her eye. Oh, and they gave her a steroid shot.
The hives cleared up and I think it was the spray that helped the most. She didn't have vomiting, but I wonder if dogs can have internal hives like humans can. That would make me throw up. For my dog, its definitely environmental allergies because this happens every year about this time.
Good luck!
I've never seen scorpians around. We figured the swelling was from a spier bite - hopefully outside! We haven't found any spiders in the house.
So I rush to get me and Layna ready to take him in...and now he seems fine again. He ate his food and is sleeping. He stopped itching. I don't know what to do.
How big is he? You can give him the capsule benadryl and that may help even more. 25mg per 25 pounds. Each pill is 25 mg. My 20 pound dog gets 1, my 55 pound dog gets 2.

What a scary thing- when a dog swells like that it is from some sort of acute incident; i.e. a bee sting, scorpion bite, snake bite etc. Rarely will you see a dog blow up like that from a food or inhalant allergen. It is possible but not likely, especially if he's never done it before.
With allergies it's important to understand the concept of "clinical threshold". Your dog, or any animal including a human, can have allergies that never present as symptoms becuase they are below their clinical threshold. But when a big event, like you witnessed with the swelling, occurs OR too many things simply pile on top of eachother the dog's clinical threshold tips and everything, even those things that previously weren't bad enough to present as symptoms, cause the dog to be miserable. Even when the acute incident has calmed down the previously tolerated allergens now can cause the animal to be miserable because their system is so stirred up. Sometimes it's hard to get these things back under control, that's probably why once the swelling went away you were still seeing the vomiting and itching. Vomiting can actually simply be a symptom of general inflammation caused by an allergic response.
That said, you may be able to get it back under control with benadryl but it is definitely possible a steroids shot will be needed. I would try the benedryl- the dose above is right on- 1mg per pound, twice a day today but if he is still really itchy and/or vomiting tomorrow a vet trip is probably in order.
I work for a lab that does allergy testing and treatment for veterinarians so this kind of stuff is what I talk about every day
My dog is being treated for an infection on his paws. He never threw up though.
DH took him into the vet and they did a scraping of his paws and ears since those are vulnerable areas. They put some gel like stuff in his ears and told us not to get his head wet for 2 weeks. His paws are being treated with steroids and an antibiotic. He's doing much better and the vet compared it to having a yeast infection on his paws.....which I immediately felt soo bad for him.
We weren't sure where he's gotten it and we're not sure if it's allergies but sounds very similar to what yours is going through. Don't just ask for the shot.
I also put anti itch cream on his paws like cortisone and that seemed to help. The vet recommended a spray just becuase it's easier to apply but I find it helps to distract him right after so he doesn't try and lick it off.
Good luck and let us know what the vet says.
