Is this crazy, or I am just old fashioned?

So I know an 18th birthday is kind of a big deal but...

My cousin's daughter turned 18 on the weekend.  The rented a hall and had a big party, with a band and dance and all.  They also rented a limo for the girls to get to the party with.

Since when is the 18th that big?  I mean, I know its been 10 years since I turned 18, but still...did anyone else have a huge bash like this when they turned 18?

Re: Is this crazy, or I am just old fashioned?

  • Since MTV started showing shows like My Super Sweet 16.
  • That seems odd. On my 18th b-day I worked til 7:00 pm and my boyfriend took me to A&W afterwards. lol
  • Uhh...no.  I don't even really remember my 18th birthday (or my 19th, or my 21st, or my 30th for that matter).  I guess I'm just boring that way, but I've never had anything like that!
  • I think I went to an Olive Garden for my 18th birthday with my boyfriend.  Not a big deal.
  • Sounds like your cousin should be on that show Party Mamas! That sounds a little extreme for an 18th birthday party...Im pretty sure I was writing a math departmental on my 18th birthday...real fun there.
  • I didn't. I had dinner and cake with my parents and then my husband (then boyfriend) took me go-karting. No parties at all.

  • I actually had a huge 18yh bday party. In the Filipino culture we call it a debut, basically debuting ourselves as adults into the world. I know Spanish do it when they are 15 so kind of something like that.

  • Back at home, it's a big deal. It's the age when you graduate from high school, go to college, and it's the legal drinking age :) Basically when you're considered an "adult" so lots of people do big bashes. Unfortunately I was at boarding school here in Canada so I missed out on the big celebrations that my friends back at home had.
  • In the Portuguese culture girls get a big party at 16 and guys are 18. I had a big family gathering woth over 100 people and it was a "big" deal for us. Like a mini-wedding (since our weddings are 250+) it's along the lines of you're now entering adulthood.

Does your cousin's spouse celebrate a big 18, maybe??

  • Never had a huge 18th party - I was working on my 18th until 10pm or something I think and then went out with my boyfriend at the time (I think). I can't even remember...how pathetic. Clearly it wasn't a birthday good enough to remember!
  • I honestly do not remember my 18th birthday, we did not have a huge bash until 19 (legal drinking in BC), then 30 was my next big one  which was a bust, DH was injured had a whole thing planned and then had to cancel because we spent the night in the ER.  So I am not that up to date on the big ones.

  • My 18th was a big deal - it meant I was legal and could finally go to bars with my own ID ;)

my mom, her friends and my girlfriends took me to the strippers. It was terrible but we had a great time. I kept winning all the games so we got heaps of free drinks!

My 16th birthday my parents rented a limo for me and 9 of my girlfriends and then paid for us to have dinner at a 'fancy' restaurant. We felt so famous (first time we'd all been in a limo).

My 21st my mom took me to Vegas with my step-sister and then we all went to Disneyland on the way home. It was an amazing trip and I'm so glad we did it.

I realize I was spoiled but birthdays are a big deal in my household - especially when you hit the milestones. DH and I did it up big for our 30ths too - now we'll wait for 40 for hte next big one.

  • I dont remember my 18th; I even asked DH and he cant remember!

For my 16th I had multiple partys and was spoiled with gifts I remember thinking that i was very lucky and spoiled and that it was definately something to remember... Then my 19th was a big bar hopping and bash with friends!

other then that the 30th and 40th and 50th are more celebrated among my family

  • I had a big party for my 18th but only because I was moving away shortly afterwards and it was the last big party with all my high school friends. Pretty much every birthday since then has been really, really low key.

  • We went to Hull to drink at a bar for my 18th.  I was the last of my friends to be legal in Quebec so we got drunk and went dancing and I had Taquilla for the first time.   My 19th I was sailing with a group of 50+ people so they all bought me presents and the one crew member my age took me to a bar ( we were in port in some small town) and got me drunk and then practically poured me into my bunk in our cabin (yes I said our.  there was one four bunk cabin for the crew members. Yes he was hot.  No we didn`t hook up.  It would have been wierd.) Afterwards he called my mom and told her he had followed her orders.  Got me hammered and made sure I was home safe.

  • My 18th was nothing like that. I feel gipped. Not really.

My family had a dinner and then I went out with my friends and 2 older sisters to the bar. Small town, not much to do.
My 21st was way more fun. My mom turned 60, I turned 21 so we went to Vegas together. heehee

  • I can't even remember my 18th birthday.

BUT, I do know that in Filipino culture (as sapicochung mentioned), 18th birthdays are a huge deal and are called debuts. I loved being at my friend's debut, I thought it was awesome!

However, if it's not a cultural thing, then I don't see the reason for super hyped up birthday parties. I agree with Jen&Joe about MTV shows like My Super Sweet 16 for corrupting our kids into thinking they deserve things like that.

  • I was going to ask if it was a cultural thing too...

My cousins in Ireland all had big parties for their 21st. Friends and family were invited, usually to the local bar, there is food, dancing, tons of drinkng (the family eventually leaves). Sounded fun to me!

If it's not a cultural thing I'd find it odd too, but hey, in this crazy world we all need more to celebrate!

  • I don't think its cultural.  She is half mexican, but her father lives in Mexico.  Her mom is my cousin, and its def not something from our tradition
