tax question

We are getting our taxes done Sunday. We are going to a local accountant since this is our first year with the house, and we want to make sure that we get every possible penny we can. How long does it take for the return? I know when we did the short form it was a week or 2. Because we are doing the long form does it take longer? We pissed out $400+ dollars yesterday for oil/furnace issues, so I am a little antsy here......

Re: tax question

  • The sooner you get it in, the better.  I'd recommend e-filing, you get your refund a lot sooner, as compared to paper filing.  The IRS does have a track your refund on-line (you also show up in the system quicker with the e-file and it estimates the date you should receive your refund too)

  • from the IRS FAQ page:

How long should I wait to check for my refund status?

    Answer:
Please wait 72 hours after you e-file. If you filed on paper, please allow 3 to 4 weeks before checking on the status of your refund.

What can I do to get my refund issued ASAP?

    Answer:
The quickest way to have your return processed and your refund issued is to file electronically. Your wait time will be cut in half - from six weeks to three.

  • Mel-I know we e-filed the last time. Can you still e-file the long form? I am going to call the accountant and see if that is what they do there. If not I will find someplace else.
  • Yes, you can e-file the regular 1040, and actually starting next year, I believe, all 1040's will be required to e-file.

The only people who will not be able to e-file this year are those claiming the new homeowner's credit, they need to file the paper version.

  • Crap, that is us. Oh well. Thanks for the help!
  • There was also the ability to amend your 2008 Tax return to claim the credit early but at this point, it may take longer for them to process an amended return rather than a new 2009 return.

I think the reason the IRS is doing this is that too many people are claiming the home buyers credit when they shouldn't be.
