lose home, lose vote = hoax

Sorry if this was brought up last week. I scanned the titles a little and didn't see this but I could have missed it.

About 2 weeks ago there was a story from the Michigan Messanger (a glorified blog) that claimed Michigan and Ohio republicans were targeting owners of foreclosures and challenging their voter registrations. That story is a complete lie. The Michigan Messenger has already retracted the part about Ohio republicans and the Michigan GOP is demanding a retraction for the Michigan part and says they will sue if a retraction doesn't happen.

While on my nest vacation I did my own research on this since it was about my own county where I'm an election inspector. I called my city clerk and he was the first to tell me this story was a complete fabrication. The person interviewed by the Michigan Messanger was my county's party chair, James Carabelli. As soon as the story came out Carabelli was furious, said the reporter lied and demanded a retraction. Carabelli said he talked in general about the challenging  process, which he personally has nothing to do with, but never once said the MiGOP was targeting foreclosures. My city clerk told me that county party chair's have nothing to do with poll challengers. That is all done by the state party apparatus. I happen to know my state party chair (his name is Saul) and a few of my good friends work for him. Saul says the MiGOP has never targeted foreclosures, is not targeting foreclosures now and will never target foreclosures. Since he is the one in charge of poll challengers he is the one who knows the most on this subject. Saul is also demanding the story be retracted or else. You can read about all this at: http://www.migop.org/news.asp

I also asked my city clerk to explain why targeting foreclosures would be "wrong" b/c I didn't think it was, and this is what I was told. Poll challengers have to have some evidence that the voter is illegally registered. In Michigan you have 60 days after you move to update your address. If an election occurs within those 60 days then the voter doesn't have to do anything. It's only if the election is more than 60 days away from your move. It doesn't matter why you move. So a home going through the process of a foreclosure is an indication the person will not be living in that house in the future, but it's not enough by itself to prove the person doesn't live there. In order to prove the person has moved the political party would have to investigate every person/home on the list and know the date the person moved to prove it was beyond the 60 day timeframe. And that's why no party is focusing on foreclosures. They don't have the resources or desire to investigate every home. It would not be wrong to use the foreclosure list as a way to find fraudulently registered voters. It's just not feasible.

Michigan is now home to massive voter fraud thanks to Acorn (*cough*). That is where all the attention is being focused, not anything to do with foreclosures.

Re: lose home, lose vote = hoax

  • Thanks for posting this here.  I would love to hear the retraction/clarification by the opposition.  Unfortunately, it will probably never happen and be spinned to say they actually meant y.

  • Thanks for posting. ?I wouldn't be surprised if the retraction never happens though.

Have any of the big newspapers up there caught on to this?  Or is it an internets thing, as far as you can tell?

    ETA to correct grammar

It's being followed by a bunch of michigan sites. I have no idea if the biggies picked up on it or not. I did a brief google search and found this:

It's from last week so it's not as current as what I just posted, but there could be other stories I haven't seen.

  • Thanks for posting. I'm glad it's a hoax.

I hope they don't so Saul (state party chair) can sue them. That site is financed in part by George Soros so anything that makes him waste money is something I support. ; )
