Oscar Nominations

Happy? Sad? Confused? Don't care until you see what people are wearing on the red carpet?

I really, really, REALLY don't understand the logic behind nominating TEN films for Best Picture. Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose? It's been bugging me all morning.

I am very happy for Pixar's "UP" which earned a Best Animated Feature, Best Screenplay, AND Best Picture nomination! It's only the second animated film in history to be nominated for Best Picture (the first was Beauty and the Beast).

Re: Oscar Nominations

  • Dirty confession: I've only seen one of the nominated movies -- in ALL of the categories.

  • The noms are pretty much as expected for me.

Apparently, the reasoning behind nominating 10 films is to have some movies in there that the more general public had heard of.

  • 10 is a bit overkill. It kind of takes away the novelty of it. Not ALL the way  away, but it isn't as select as before.

I haven't really got to read many of the nominations. I heard that Avatar and The Hurt Locker were big ones.

And don't feel too bad, I highly doubt I have seen any of the nominated movies either.

I haven't seen the whole list but from what I've seen so far, not only have I not seen ANY of the movies, I haven't even heard of some of them.

ETA: I looked at the whole list. The movies I've seen are not on there for substance! Haha. Harry Potter, Star Trek and Transformers are all on there for visual effects of one sort or another. :) I'm so deep!

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I heard an interesting perspective on the radio today about why there are 10 best picture nominees.  One side of the argument is that  the supposed "best" movies in the country are movies most Americans don't even have access to, so are they supposed to feel like hte things they DO have access to are subpar?  The other side is saying this makes the Oscars seem "lowbrow".  The columnist I was listening to said, basically, so what? Yes, the "everyman" movies nominated this year - The Blind Side, for example- aren't as groundbreaking as most best picture nominees, but if these wide release movies keep getting best picture nods, maybe Hollywood will step up their game with the wide release movies.
