What do you do when your overwhelmed @ work?

I work for a small company, 3 people.

I am currently VERY overwhelmed almost to the point where my anxiety is kicking in.

My one boss has been attempting to get us new business, and for the most part we received it, but we (read, I), have no idea what I'm doing. He is basically just saying "Do this, Do That"...but I don't know how, and either does he.  My other boss, is so technology challenged, and is no help at all.

Any tips before I lose my mind?

  • Looking at the big picture can be too overwhelming. Try to break it into manageable chunks and then prioritize them. Other than that... I've got nothing. I hope things start to become easier. Tongue Tied

  • Like Mames said, try to break it down into segments. But if the problem is that you don't know what to do, take the segments to your boss and ask the specific questions you need to find out how. If he can't answer your questions (big problem!) than ask him to guide you to someone/somewhere who can. If he can't even do that, he needs to rethink the assignment.

    Good luck!

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • To-Do lists are your (well, my, but could be your) friend.

Prioritize tasks by deadline. Big project next week? Doesn't matter if you've got smaller things that need to be done by this Thursday. Focus on those first.

Divide and conquer. I like to work on small pieces of each project rather than tackling one project all at once because it makes me feel more productive overall.

Take a "smoke break" (BUT DON'T SMOKE!!!). Most companies allow employees random 15 minute breaks for smoking, which is something I believe non-smokers should get to take advantage of as well. Go for a walk, get a soda, just GET AWAY from your desk for a little bit.

When all else fails, ignore everything and come play on The Nest :)

  • try to break up the workload into small tasks, and ask a lot of ??s if necessary.

I tend to procrastinate if i am overloaded w/work, at least until i break it down enough so it isnt too intimidating to dig in.

  • I generally cry... and get angry... and take things out unnecessarily on DH...

I'm super bad at dealing with stress.  Especially work-related stress.  I often feel like there is no outlet for it.  But I vent, to my friends, mom, DH, etc.  I try not to let it show that I'm flustered/stressed/angry at work so that I dont break down.  So I ignore it and then I get home and have a breakdown.  Its healthy, I know.

In all seriousness though, the pp's have offered good advice.  Make lists, prioritize, break things into pieces so its more manageable, take a break every once in a while.  But crying can be therapeutic too -- just don't do it at work.

  • Thanks ladies.

My situation, is not so much in regards to workloads.

My boss said we are experts at doing something, when we have no clue. And were supposed to have a dry run on Thursday.

So, attempting to look like a pro, and hoping I don't f' it up, is taking it's toll.
