NER: Any glasses-only wearers in these parts?

I've been wearing contacts since I was about 14, 15. I've always had a pair of glasses to give my eyes a break or for emergencies, but for the most part, I'm a contacts-only kind of girl (Yes, I'm vain like that).

But somehow, I ruptured a small blood vessel in my eye last week and the edict is down from my eye doctor--no contacts for a bit. At all.

I actually have a pair of glasses I like, so I don't mind wearing them. But the one situation that throws me is working out--I'm supposed to start training with my personal trainer again tomorrow and she's intense. I sweat like crazy, I'm jumping up and down and doing lunges and I'm worried my glasses are going to get more abused than I want them too. And they weren't cheap... I don't exactly want to mess them up.

Any ideas on how to deal? Are there any specific things you do to care for your glasses while working out? I'm blind as a bat and absolutely can't go without them.

I've actually even debated driving to the gym with my glasses then popping one contact lens in my healthy eye and be "half-blind" in the other eye. But I'm afraid that might make me dizzy...

  • I do, but don't need them all the time.  Maybe, and this may sound not so great, a neck cord?  They are great for athletes-especially a professor that used it to play raquet ball.

  • Im a contacts only wearer myself (vanity in part but I also get headaches and just dont see as well with my glasses even though the Rx is right). I was glasses only up through Jr High though and I was a competitive runner back then. It is pretty dweeby but I used Croakies (I think that is what they are called). http://www.croakies.com/products.aspx?cat=CRS

The help keep your glasses tighter around your head so they dont bounce around as much.

How long will you be glasses only for? I am blind as a bat too... if it is for a long time I would consider getting a second pair of glasses - get a cheapo pair (target optical maybe?) that you can use to work out in and as backup for the others just in case.

  • I do half and half between glasses and contacts. I guess it depends on your prescription (mine are -3. something), but I've done the single-contact thing a lot without dizziness. After 15 mins or so my eyes adjust and I see almost as well as with one as with two.?

  • I mostly wear glasses (contacts are mostly for situations in which my glasses might get broken). My glasses don't bounce and I've never had a problem keeping my glasses on my face no matter how much I sweat, but I wear wire frames. Do you have plastic frames? Those do tend to slip more than wire with the nose pieces. I'd suggest going once with the glasses just to find out exactly what the problem is. Maybe it won't be so bad.

Don't do the one contact thing, though. It can throw off your depth perception which can be bad when working out.

  • Another contacts-only wearer that is blind as a bat. Seriously, my Rx is like -7 or something insane like that. BUT - I used to figure skate with glasses all the time, and while I hated it for depth perception issues, I never had a problem with them slipping if I wore metal/wire frames. My tortise-shell (sp?) plastic nerd frames I wear at night around the house start slipping if I sweat even a tiny bit.

  • I'm glasses-only, but my vision is good enough that I don't need them all the time.  I can drive around my own city without them because I know all the street names.  But if I'm going somewhere and I need to see street signs, I have to have them.

For me, working out without them is easily doable.  Can you put your glasses in a case and leave them by your water bottle?  Or is your vision really bad?

  • Another blind-as-a-batter - my Rx is -9. I mostly wear contacts, but I have run in glasses hear and there. It's actually not as bad as I thought it would be, and I don't have metal frames. I wiped the sweat off the bridge of my nose every now and then, but no biggie. It probably depends on your glasses and maybe even the shape of your nose - I'd try it once and see what happens.

Good luck with the personal trainer!

  • Thanks, everyone. I think I'm just going to have to give it a shot tomorrow and see what happens.

The pair I have are plastic frames, so they kind of slip a little as it is. I just love them so much I deal :)

I'm going to be glasses only for at least a couple of weeks, but even when I get the green light to use contacts again, my eye dr. wants me to use them a lot less--almost one day glasses, one day contacts; as I'm getting older, my eyes aren't loving my contacts as much as they used to, sigh.

So yes, I think another pair of frames are in the making. And just this weekend, I had my eye dr. take one of my pairs of sunglasses and make them prescription (saved myself $200 on getting a new frame). So...we shall see.

Hopefully I won't kill myself or my glasses tomorrow when I'm back with my trainer...now I can just be nervous about the asswhuppin she's going to give me ;)
