What are your favorite/'must visit' cities in the US?

Hey ladies!

What are your 'must visit' / your favorite cities in the continental US?

What do you like there? What is on your 'must see' and 'must do' this for that city?

TIA!

Re: What are your favorite/'must visit' cities in the US?

  • Washington, D.C. hands down. I lived there for a few years, and would move back in a heartbeat. I'm a huge museum nerd, so a must do are the museums. All the Smithsonians are fabulous. Also, you should see the monuments. I recommend seeing the FDR at night, it's phenomenal! My favorite is the Washington Monument, not sure why though. Also, Georgetown is fun to walk around. There's a lot of history just in that area, and has some good shopping. A good day trip, if you're in that area is Annapolis MD. It's about a 45 minute drive.

Kennebunk or Portland, Maine. I love the the harbors and lighthouses. There's not a crazy amount of stuff to do, but it's beautiful.

  • New York City and San Francisco.  I used to travel for work (still do some) so you can pretty much name the city and I've seen it yet those two cities top my list - both places I'd travel to anytime.

Way too many things to do to even mention but I always get that giddy feeling when I'm downtown in either city.  Lucky me, I'm going to San Fran next week.  It's been a few years so I'm beyond excited!

  • Favorite city in the whole continental US is San Francisco.  I just like how laid back it is.  Walk around Fisherman's Wharf and get some Clam Chowder in a Sourdough breadbowl.  Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and then visit the little hippy town on the other side.  Go to Chinatown and eat some awesome Chinese Food.

I also agree with New York City.  Need I really list all the things that you can do there??  I always love visiting but then the hustle and bustle of the big city is overwhelming to me after a few days (hence why I prefer S.F.)

On my to-do list: New Orleans, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Martha's Vineyard.  Saving these for when we have kids and are more limited in our travel budget and time!

  • nashville! i haven't been but some great bars/country music/good food.
  • chicago. love the atmosphere there. navy pier is great. shopping.
  • NYC:  Go here during Christmas (its the best time of year imo).  Stay on Park Avenue (I am partial to the Waldorf) , walk to Rockefeller from there (go to top of the rock, see all of the city from the top) Walk 5th avenue (stop in at Tiffany's and FAO Schwartz).  Eat at Carnegie deli for the best deli sandwiches and BEST cheesecake ever!  Take the double decker sight-see tours (we have taken the hop on hop off 2 day, and the city of lights-we loved both).  Times square is ok, but a must see (dont eat anywhere near here!).  Def. see something on broadway.  Eat at Serendipity3.

Chicago:  Stay on the mag mile (shop), go to a cubs game, eat a chicago dog (a must!), go to the John Hancock to see view of the city, Garrett's popcorn. Umm, most of my Chicago musts are food, haha!!

Someone mentioned ME- a huge ditto to that! (Bar Harbor, Freeport, Old Orchard Beach, Kennebunkport, Acadia National Park).

Wash. D.C.- national mall, tours, museums.  You can't see it all in one trip, it's impossible!  I do love Georgetown too :)

Asheville NC/Smokies: See the smokies (camping or in a chalet) then take a day trip to Asheville to see the Biltmore Estate.

VA Beach:  We love going here for a cheap beach vacation.  The beaches are super clean, and they have an awesome boardwalk!

  • San Francisco/Napa
So much to see and do.  We enjoyed just hanging out around Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. We also love Alcatraz. The food is amazing!  We didn't have one bad meal, and we just stopped into places as we saw them, not based on any recommendations.  Napa is awesome and just an hour from SF!  We can't wait to go back.

    Charleston, SC
Again, amazing food.  I love the feel of the city, very laid back.  Great architecture.  The market is a must.

  • I would add St. louis to that list as well. Mark and I love taking a quick trip there since the drive isnt that bad. There is also the usuals - San Fran, NYC, Chicago, and depending on what you like to do the list gets longer. We like some of the older towns and even places like Atlanta, etc. I usually get recommendations from a friend of mine who's goal is to visit 50 states before she is 50. I think its an awesome idea and wish I would have started earlier in life.

  • Agree with PP... San Fran, New York City, Boston, and Loved Seattle as well! I really like Chicago, but I think the cities below would be my first choice... then Chicago. Washington D.C. (never been, but I'm sure that's a good one) :)

San Fran - the atmosphere, Fishermans Wharf, Lombard Street, the town cars, Golden Gate Bridge, rose gardens

New York - Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Time Square, people watch :), business district, little Italy, Chinatown

Seattle - Mt. Rainer, rose gardens, Japenese garden, there's a small island across from the city I can't think of the name, but you can rent bikes and ride around... it's beautiful. The space needle.

Boston - the historic trail, Paul Revere's home, whale watching... I just love the charm of the city

  • I haven't been there in a long time, but San Antonio, TX is a lot of fun.  There is the riverwalk there which is a really fun and beautiful atmosphere.  The Alamo is nearby, which is an awesome piece of history.

I also like Baltimore (harbor area is awesome - catch an Orioles/Ravens game if you can), San Diego (weather is amazing!!!), and Nashville (great city to explore by feet and there is live entertainment going on 24/7).

  • Chicago - walk around downtown, esp. on Michigan. Visit the parks.

New Orleans - visit the garden district and spend the evenings in the French Quarter. But don't be afraid to visit some of the outlying parishes, there are some gems hidden out there.

Thousand Islands (NY) - Visit the castle and tool around the islands, then visit some of the local shops. It's a great, affordable place to camp/visit even in the summer months.

  • San Fran for sure.  I went there by myself and felt so safe.  Just exploring the city is fun.

I forgot about San Antonio, but also a fun city.  The Riverwalk is awesome.

Savannah, Georgia.  Love it!  So much history and so beautiful.  I think I could seriously live there.

  • Mmmm, puffy tacos in San Antonio!!  I did't get a chance to see the Alamo when I was there so I want to do that.

I want to go to NOLA.  I was supposed to go to a conference there one week before Katrina but they cut my travel budget.  Maybe in a few years once they've recovered more.

Dh and I went to the Lancaster, PA area a few years ago.  I want to go back and go to Philly for a day.

Heck, I'd be happy to go to Columbus even!  They're more of a cultural melting pot than Cincy will ever be.

My boss is going there for a conference next month, I am extremely jealous.

  • I love Charleston and I like Nashville and Austin, TX.

Really there is no specific "city" I'd love to live in.
