Are we gonna talk about LOST? (spoilers)
Alternate universes that Juliette knew about when she said "it worked?" More other Others? How can they just not have Shannon on the plane? It doesn't make sense that "they" can change things before the crash. Ok so the man in black is the smoke monster. Is Richard suppposedly one of the other Others that live in the temple? Have we seen that chick before who was with the temple Others who said she was on Flight 815? If Richard is a temple Other, how come he lived in tents in the jungle for a million billion years?

I'm guessing that since in that universe they destroyed the energy pocket thingy, that a lot of things somehow would be different. I think that can explain how Desmond was on the plane - still not totally sure as to why Shannon is missing. I have wonder if they just couldn't get that actress to come back, lol.
She was the flight attendant that gave Jack extra liquor - right?
I'm not even convinced Desmond really was on the plane since he disappeared when Jack came back to his seat.
I guess she could have been the same chick. Her hair was a lot shorter and she seemed a lot skinnier on the plane.
ETA: And you are totally right about things changing before the plane. I just remembered that Hurley told Sawyer that nothing bad ever happens to him.
We were also thinking alternative universe, not sure how Juliette would know though.
Yeah, that made no sense that Shannon was not on the plane. DH also brought up the point that Hurley would not have won the lottery though if there was no island anymore. (since we saw it at the bottom of the ocean) and no hatch numbers to enter.
The chick at the temple who said she was on the same flight as Jack and them was the flight attendant that gave Jack an extra bottle of liquor.
Not sure about the whole Richard thing.

eta: I just read on 12-24 that it is possibly a scheduling conflict that caused the whole "Shannon not on the plane" thing. HA, DH thought I was crazy!
right. the one who the others kidnapped. they took her and the kids that first night. those two kids were the ones that she brought to kate et al this episode.
i agree that destroying the magnetic pull in 1977 would change lots of things from then on. maybe hurley only has good luck because now those numbers are meaningless? and desmond was on the plane because his boat never went to the island, maybe whitmore never became a bad guy - desmond's life could be greatly altered. but i'm not finding a connection with shannon. or how juliette knew "it worked" and why that would be important to tell sawyer (unless he can do something about it).
so do you think sayid is now the vessel for jacob, the way locke is now the man in black?
That was my thought as well. I do not think Desmond was actually on the plane either.
I wonder what is up with Jack's dad getting "lost." I think it will be an interesting twist if Jack operates on Locke and is the reason Locke can walk again in this new reality.

i think richard is like jacob and the man in black. he lives forever, doesn't age, and like jacob he can go off the island. he's jacob's right-hand-man, living among the jungle-dwellers as their protector while jacob was trapped in that cabin for some reason. and the last time TMIB saw richard, richard was in chains - maybe TMIB had him as a captive and jacob somehow rescued him, leaving TMIB without a physical body?
Definitely! And it's a good thing too. I would have had a few choice words for the producers if they killed off my crush.

Re: Alt Reality
So this is where my obsession with watching Doctor Who pays off. In New Who there's this idea that every decision you make creates an alternate universe around the unmade decisions (like the movie Sliding Doors). So I'm a little more forgiving about this jump into the alternate universe where Hurly's lucky, Shannon's still a twit, and (best I can tell) Michael and Walt aren't even on the plane. I'm willing to buy that. (Also, production wise, some things were just not logistically possible. Actors are unavailable. Walt, for instance, will look too old to ever come back.)
I don't think Jack is actually remembering stuff from the island (though it wasn't until the end of the ep that I came to this conclusion. IIRC, he met Desmond in the stadium before he was ever on the island, so that's probably what he's remembering when he sees Desmond.

Love them for the sheer WTFery of it. I told my DH they're hippie ninjas. The Oceanic chick and the two kids were tailies that were kidnapped, right?
Everything else just completely blows my mind, but in a good way. I really enjoyed the episode.

And why was Jack bleeding?? Weird that he has some sort of connection to the island universe but the other island survivors don't seem to.

i think that we don't know for sure that the island is under water.... we just know that it was at one point. we don't know if that was the present, or if it'll still be that way in the future... the survivors are all connected, even without the crash. i think they'll all end up being pulled back together (by jacob) somehow, somewhere, for some purpose.
when they showed hurley waking up (on the plane) and sawyer looking at him, i thought that sawyer had picked hurley's pocket.
who was hurley talk to on the phone while waiting for a cab?

Shannon missing is the first thing I said to DH. That doesn't really make sense in any scenario.
The chick who said she was on the flight was the flight attendant (who had Jack save Charlie).

I don't think he does have memory of the island. He remembers Desmond from the time they met pre-island. Remember... they were running stadium stairs somewhere once? It showed Desmond calling him "brother" like he always does.

No, I do NOT think that Jacob is "in" Sayid right now. Maybe the show will prove me wrong, but I think that would be too easy. I think Sayid is forever tied to the island though, just like little Ben was when Kate took him to the Others to fix when he got shot in the 70's. Didn't Richard take him to the temple then too?
In the future, must remember to clear my Wednesday mornings in order to talk LOST ad nauseum.

Re: the Shannon thing, I read on another Web site that the reason she's "missing" is because in Season 1, she and Boone fought while on the plane and she moved to first-class. I haven't watched Season 1 in years, so I don't remember, but this seems like a good explanation to me (although Boone said she wasn't interested in leaving her bad relationship, making us believe that she stayed in Australia, so WTH knows).
Love the movie Sliding Doors, and I'm loving LOST so far, too. Although, I think I need to re-watch last night's episode because it was a lot to absorb.
I like the way they are showing how the characters would be different but still possibly interact in the alternate present time. Like when the customs lady was asking Sun if she knew English, I kept expecting Sun to respond in English. . .but apparently she may not know English in the new present time. (Or. . .does she??)
E! has an article with some interesting points, especially some ideas about Richard that I hadn't considered.

I don't know--Jim had already been taken away when the lady was asking Sun if she spoke English, so he may not have found out. I think the way she said "No (pause. . .pause. . .wait for it) English" was likey purposefully ambiguous. If the characters in the alternate reality are different/have not had the same experience as the characters we "know", she may not have ever learned English on the sly. Does that make sense? I think part of what's interesting about the alternate reality is figuring out the differences from what we'd expect if the only change in the story was that the plane didn't crash.

i think she speaks english and knew that was her chance to save his butt. but having just learned that he was carrying a bunch of money and not willing to tell her why, coupled with her desire to go to america to leave him, she saw this as her opportunity to send him up a creek while avoiding a confrontation.
