So get this...

The phone rings this morning.  It's 8:30.  I answer it thinking it's DH because sometimes he calls me when he gets to work.  It's not.  It's a machine "this is an important message from HSBC please stay on the line" I am thinking that it's regarding our Futureshop account. If you are like a second late making a payment they call.  I paid online on the due date so I thought maybe it hadn't been processed yet.

so the woman on the phone says "Hi, I urgently need to speak to Jason"

"I'm sorry he is at work.  Can I ask who is calling"

"I am calling from HSBC regarding a private business matter"

"I am the one that deals with all of the family business.  Is it regarding a past due bill?  I just made a large payment online if you would like a confirmation number."

**rude sound**"I told you it was a PRIVATE business matter"

and then she hung up on me!  Now correct me if I am wrong, if you are calling regarding a bill and someone tells you they have made a payment even if they are not the one who holds the account, would you not say something along the lines of "I will look for that payment thank you. in the meantime is there a time that would be better to call back?"

or if you are making a sales call and would like someone to open up a line of credit (which they do about once every couple of months would you not at least say

"No.  It's not regarding a bill payment.  It's regarding something else. Is there some time that would be better to call back?"

Kind of bad for business if your sales person basically says "Are you dumb? B!tch. I said it was private."

Re: So get this...

  • Honestly to me this sounds like a collection agency pretending to be someone else just to get him on the phone. Or it could be someone just phishing for personal information. I doubt it was really HSBC. If I were you I would call them and let them know what happened.
  • I hate to say this, but are you *sure* it was, in fact, HSBC calling? My friend just got a call VERY similar to this one (they asked for her spouse) from the Scotia Bank and when she called Scotia Bank to basically ask them "WTF?!" they told her that they have had similar complaints recently and that it's a telephone scam to get personal info from you!

This has happened to us from Scotia as well...and we haven't had any business with them in 2 years. They get very threatening on the phone too and then hang up when we give them no information.

  • i did call back to complain and the lady I spoke to said that she wasn't aware that a call had been made but she would review the call logs and call back this evening when DH was home.  She also said that they were going to call today in regards to a bill.  And that if I had the confirmation numbers (which she didn't want to hear because I wasn't DH)  then she believed me and was going to check to make sure if they just hadn't been processed yet.

  • I agree next time I wouldn't offer information.  We always get calls from our bank insisting they need to speak to DH (because he's listed first on the account I think) and I've given up trying to explain they might just as well tell me since I deal with the banking.  But I never offer more then that, unsolicited calls don't get information from me, I have to call you or you have to say "I'm calling in regards to x that you left a message or we spoke about earlier" just because you never really know.

Anyway, now I just laugh when they finally get DH and he says "I don't know you have to talk to my wife, she deals with our bank accounts."  If they try to insist on telling him he just switches to "I don't think we're interested, bye"

  • I had someone call the other day and ask if they could speak to one of my parents. hehe guess I sound like a kid. Anyhow, when I said "sorry, who would you like to speak with?", they hung up on me.

Anyhow, whenever I get a call from somewhere claiming to be the bank or or whatever, I tell them I will call them back and I use the number on the back of my card. I will ask the person for a reference number for the call though so that if it's legit, they will actually be able to pull up the file and easily access.

As for HSBC, they have the worst security with personal information and tons of places claiming they are HSBC (I believe their head office is in Asia). I bank with them and it sucks. We've had our account broken into for the 4th time in the past few months after HSBC accidentally released our names/email addresses awhile ago.
