So here are the shoes. The blue shoes aren't horrible but the style looks more suited for a little girl, not a boy. The red ones are just awful IMO.

and this is the clasp: a CLAW clasp on toddler shoes

and here is the red pair, it's just got all kinds of wrong going on

To make matters worse, I think my MIL knows they are horrible and has found a European childeren's shoe store in Hindsdale. Lord, help me now.
Re: Shoe Pictures
I found the shoe store. Good lord they are expensive and not worth the $$ IMO. Once she gets something in her mind, it's hard to talk her out of it.

Oh my gosh! Poor poor David! I have a feeling your MIL is going to try pressuring him into wearing those shoes when she watched him...and he won't know any better!
You should call the store and tell them not to sell anything to your MIL
I don't mind the blue one's really. If David was a girl, I'd be all for them. Especially with little white tights and a cute jumper dress. Those red ones are just really bad.
In my MIL's defense, she didn't pick them out. She has her SIL, who lives in Poland, pick them out and send them here. I guess they are popular brands over there.
Beside the fact they are awfully expensive some of those shoes aren't too bad. Not what I would choose to spend my money on though! If your MIL insists on buying another pair maybe have YH send her a couple of suggestions to go with the ones that aren't as bad.
I think this is my favorite pair...at $110! YIKES!!
No they aren't bad but they are not worth spending that much money on, especially since his feet keep growing so fast. He is in a size 8 right now, and my SIL got him a pair of Pumas size 9 for Christmas. He is good on shoes at the moment.
Some of them on that website are actually kind of cute!
These
are all sorts of retro (very bowling shoe like) but could definitely be suitable (at least for now.)
Do you think you could give her a few suggestions? Some of them really are comparable to mens' fashion:
Then at least you could steer her away from the semi-girl style looking ones and she gets to feel the whole "I bought my grandson those Polish shoes" pride.
Hopefully you won't be able to see ALL the detail (like the T-strap kind of thing and the red claw clasp) with pants on?
The blue pair are too small, so I don't have to worry about that. DH absolutely HATES the red pair and will not let David out of the house in them. I think she bought them to be slippers in the house and doesn't expect him to go outside in them. At least that's what I'm telling myself.
Blue: Cute.
Red: Beyond awful!
