Wedding Dress in a Cedar Chest?

Does anyone have thoughts about storing a wedding dress in a cedar chest?  I have a few wool outfits I made in high school for competitions and I was thinking about finding a cedar chest to keep them and my wedding dress in.  I don't know much about the negative and positive of cedar chests except that they are good at keeping away moths (which is a plus for the wool I know).

I found this cool old trunk on craigslist for $20 and if no one's snagged it and they're willing to wait til Sunday for me to get it, I think I might take the hour plus drive to get it.  It only had cedar on the bottom.  Any idea if that's enough?

Re: Wedding Dress in a Cedar Chest?

  • if you kept your dress ziped up in its cover I think it would be ok.

  • I don't know anything about cedar other than anything that comes out of cedar chests smell wonderful!

That being said, for $20, I'd be skeptical that it's all cedar.

  • My parents and grandparents have always used cedar chests to store things, my parents have two at their house. I think storing your dress in one would be a great idea, although just be aware that it will smell VERY strong if you ever take it out. I remember disliking the smell when I was little, it smelled very musty to me, although most people really do like the smell.

I have heard that some fabrics, I think - cotton, linen and rayon - can be damaged by being stored in a cedar chest, due to some sort of acid it gives off, so if your dress is made up of any of those, I might be hestitant about storing it in there. For $20 that chest is a really good deal, and even if its not a permanant storage place for your dress, it will do a good job for the time being.

  • I keep all of our sheets and blankets in a cedar chest. But I always wash them before I use them because I cannot stand the smell. My mom bought me the chest years ago for my wedding dress, but I don't think I will store it in there just because of the smell.

  • Thanks for your thoughts!  The chest was snagged (way too good of a deal!) so I'll have some more time to research the way cedar reacts with different fabrics, etc...
