XP'd from 9-5 board...co-worker vent

I'm sure this subject has been posted about numerous times but...I have a co-worker who works right next to me at a front desk on a daily basis that I positively LOATHE WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING.  It's a long story (that has been going on for over a year), but in a nutshell she's a nosy old battle ax who comes in every day just to make my life a misery.  She gets joy out of seeing others unhappy.  I work with 3 other co-workers who also hate her and we've gone to our supervisor and HR several times to complain.  We basically took it as far as we could and were finally told by our supervisor that it's a dead issue, they're not going to do anything about the situation, and if we want, we can go talk to personal counselors about it!

My guess is they won't touch her because she's older (60-something) and claims to have health problems/a disability.  She's a horrible racist person who actually harrasses me on a daily basis, but it's nothing I can prove, so I have to come in and deal with it.  Some days (like today) it's so bad I actually want to physically hurt her (and I'm not the only one)...and I can't look for another job in this economy... and I'm not the one who should have to leave...but some days I do wish I could go elsewhere because I can't stand it.  Talk about run-on sentences!  Tongue Tied

  • I'm sorry, that's awful.  Your employer has an obligation to provide you with a good, safe working environment, and racist remarks absolutely take away from that.  Even if they aren't going to fire her, they should be doing internal meetings between her and HR to figure out why she acts this way and what can be done to change her behavior.  I'm glad that you have at least reported it so that there is a record of complaints against the woman.  Ugh, I hate stories like this.
  • Wow, that's horrible.  I can't believe your supervisors/HR aren't going to do anything about it when multiple people have voiced the same complaints.  Does she do a good job?  Would she be hard to replace?  Ugh, how frustrating.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • This is why I could never see myself working for a large company...or a company where I was not able to tell someone to go F off when needed.
  • Thanks for the replies, ladies.

Like I said, I posted it on the 9-5 board as well and they don't understand what it is she is doing and why I don't have any proof...this is what I replied:

It's mainly little petty things like staring at me for several minutes on end...making little comments under her breath...invading my personal space...

I've been documenting the more serious things that go on...I presented all of it to my supervisor/HR, and was basically ignored.

I have considered bringing in my digital cam just to start getting actual proof of it all...but isn't that in itself illegal (to record her without her consent)?

  • They have had several internal meetings between her, HR, and even 4 of us who have stepped forward to complain...it's unreal.  None of us can figure out why she is still here except that they're more afraid of her (sueing) than of us...I believe just because she is older and claims all of these health issues.

She does have like 40 years of experience or something, but most of those years (save for like the last couple) have been sat in a back office by herself.  We work in a front-desk client service envrionment and she is completely wrong for the job...in fact, when they were bought out by the current organization, they wanted to hire all the employees from the previous firm except her...they only hired her because one of the doctors convinced them to take her...there was GOOD REASON why they didn't want to hire her in the first place...

I know, Christar...it's only every day that I wish I could be in some sort of business for myself and be my own boss...it's every day I wish I could tell her to F off.  In fact, one of the girls who was transferred to another office because of this woman did just that and was written up for it.  :(

It's literally the most frustrating thing ever because it's like she can do pretty much anything she wants and not get sacked for it.  They write her up constantly, but they won't fire her.
