IUD and condoms...

I am getting an iud put in today and im just wondering if any one would trust it enough to not wear a condom i have no desire to have another baby any time soon and neither does DH

Re: IUD and condoms...

  • Yes, I trust it!  And no we don't use condoms.
  • The IUD is actually more effective than the pill.  I've had one for almost 2 years now and we've never used a backup form of protection.  You don't need condoms when you're using something as reliable as birth control pills or an IUD, in my opinion anyway.

  • Be sure to ask your doctor how long you need to use backup though after getting it inserted.  I can't remember if you need to give it a couple of weeks to "kick in" or not.

  • I had to use backup for 3 days and that was it!
  • My doctor told me it was effective immediately. Whats the point of getting an IUD if you are still going to use condoms? I've had it for about a year and never had any troubles.

  • I have Mirena and do not use back-up.  I was told I could have sex as soon as I felt like it.  I was not advised to use condoms and from what I've read and what my doctor told me, IUDs are effective right away.  There is no room for human error like the pill or other forms of BC and it's one of the most reliable forms there is.  Mirena is 99.99% effective.

ETA:  you most likely won't feel like having sex for at least a day or two after having it inserted.  I cramped the day I got it and then was fine after that.  My period actually stopped the day after I had it put in and I had it inserted on day 3 of my period.

  • I've had mine for a yr and a half now. We had sex the night I had it put in (no condom no nothing) and it was great.

  • We trust it and never use condoms with it.  Haven't had an unplanned pregnancy yet so it must be working.  I think you'd be safe to forego the condoms without worrying.
