If you save in a lot of areas, where do you like to blow some $? Is it clothes, shoes, home stuff, eating out, travel, etc?
I'm such a penny pincher, I seriously never buy anything unless it's on sale. I'm so bad it drives my DH a little crazy. The one area where I don't mind spending money is on vacation travel. I look at it as life experiences, I may or may not ever see this place again, so why not live it up. I still look for good deals on vacations and such, but once there I let go of the purse strings.
Re: What is your splurge?
Leather whips, chains, fur masks...
Seriously though, I don't think I splurge on one particular area. I'll just go without buying anything for a while and then if I see something I really want, I'll get it. I have a few nice purses, shoes, jeans, etc.
DH and I do eat out a bit, so I guess we splurge on food.
We eat out a lot. We've gotten better, but still like to go out to dinner ,especially on weekends. Not even expensive places. And we usually check coupons before we go somewhere. We'll go spend $15 at Shanes Rib Shack which isn't a lot, but adds up over time.
I would love to travel more. I would still look around for deals, but like you said, I see it as an experience and don't mind forking over the money.
Me, too! Which is why I'm glad we have a Coach outlet a little more than an hour away. They're still pricey, but not as much as they should be!
our agreement is as follows:
DH can spend on technology(to keep us up to date)/modern electronics and gadgets as long as I can spend the same amount on home decor/keeping us fashionable
usually it makes us both think twice
This exactly. I wish we had enough funds for some light travel but I'm putting too much into savings right now so we can pay off our credit card debt.
We do splurge a little more than the norm on eating out. We go to TGIFridays on Saturday nights and blow about $50. It's our weekly date night.
wine. i am married to a wine snob, but i don't really object, since i get in on that!
i have a lot of shoes, but i usually get a good deal on them.
Big ticket items/upgrades for the house, like appliances, flooring, or fixtures. We plan to stay in our house for awhile and though some of the changes can be classified as investments, it's mainly for aesthetics/our enjoyment. I generally ignore the price tag and get what I like even if it's more than the average cost for that particular item. Obviously that's within reason, it's not like we're getting professional grade stuff or anything. I'd rather splurge the money on travel, but we rarely have the time to go anywhere (well we did, but that was when DH was unemployed and splurging wasn't really an option).
This. I said I would never spend more than $60 on a purse. I did. And I want to do it again. Next weekend to be in fact. That is if I get my way.
And shoes, and wine.
My one weekness is kitchen gadets. Pampered Chefs, KitchenAid, Dishes, etc. I prefer a new high tech blender over flowers in a heartbeat.
I tend to splurge on bicycle stuff-- depending on the perspective these expenses could also be considered "necessities" but, in reality, I realize that I didn't have to get as nice a bike with the level of parts that I have. And it's nice to get envious looks from other cyclists.
We only rent, but we are splurging on housing right now. Given that DH is a grad student we probably should spend less, but we love our current location, so I am okay with it.
We also occasionally splurge on dinner/weekend trips/travel.
