Another Nuvaring question

So When I was on the pill, when I was on my reminder pills,  my H and I would have sex.  (I didn't think I could get pregnant that week)

Well now that I am on the ring, I am nervous to have sex during my 1 week without the ring.   Is it safe for us to have sex and not worry about getting pregnant?

Also If I decide to leave it in for 4 weeks, then I won't get a period?

TIA
Karleen

Re: Another Nuvaring question

  • Correct - as long as you leave your ring in for the full 3 weeks like you're supposed to, you can have unprotected sex that 4th week and not worry about pregnancy, you're still protected.  That 4th week is just like your placebo pill week.

Yes, you can leave your ring in for a full 4 weeks - as long as you put a new ring in immediately afterwards.  It's like skipping your placebo pills and starting a new pack immediately.  That's what I do.  You will most likely get some spotting around the time that you would normally have your period, but I haven't had a full-on period in months.  It's just SUPER important that you go no longer than 4 weeks on one ring - any more than that and you're at risk for pregnancy, since the amount of hormones in the ring drop drastically after 4 weeks.

  • So can you leave the ring in for 4 weeks. then have a ring free week (and have your period) then put a new one in?

    NO!!!

If you leave your ring in for 4 weeks, you CANNOT have a ring-free week.  You HAVE to put a new one in immediately after that 4th week.

Just remember that you have to put in a new ring every 4 weeks.  You can take your ring out after 3 and have a ring-free week and a period, or you can leave your ring in for the full 4 weeks.  But you have to put a new ring in after 4 weeks.

The hormones in the ring are only good for 4 weeks, any longer than that and you're at a high risk for pregnancy.

  • Ok, so what if you do not have sex during the ring free week. Lets say for example. I put in a new ring on the 1st of the month and i take it out after 4 weeks. Then I leave it out for a week, have my period and put a new one in. after my period is over and the new ring is in, am I still at risk?

    Thanks!!

    You're not getting it.

    You can either:

    1. Put the ring in.  Leave it in for 4 weeks.  Take it out.  Put a new ring in immediately after taking the other one out.  There is no week where you do not have the ring in.

    OR

    2. Put the ring in.  Leave it in for 3 weeks.  Take it out.  Wait 1 week, during which you will get your period.  Put a new ring in.

There is NO OPTION in which you leave the ring in for 4 weeks and then have a week without the ring.  It's either 4 weeks in, immediate replacement or 3 weeks in 1 week no ring then replacement.

  • To use your example of putting a ring in on Jan 1st you can:

    1.  remove it on Jan 29th (4 weeks) and insert a new ring on Jan. 29th (same day)

    OR

    2. remove it on  Jan 22nd (3 weeks) and insert a new ring on Jan 29th (one week later)

  • How is it that you've been using this BC for two years and you still don't get how it works?  You are aware that there are instructions in every NuvaRing box, yes?  They're very explicit--you should have a look.  If that's too much, perhaps you need a less-complicated method of birth control.  Like an IUD.  Or tubal ligation  Hmm

ETA: I see now you're not the one who's been using NR for two years.  Regardless, I don't understand why you can't just follow the directions in the box.

    **facepalm**

If you do it that way, you're going to end up pregnant.

What part of this are you not understanding?  YOU CANNOT GO MORE THAN 4 WEEKS WITHOUT A NEW RING.  NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

If you put in a new ring on the 1st of the month and take it out after 4 weeks, YOU HAVE TO PUT A NEW ONE IN IMMEDIATELY.  You do not leave it out for a week after that.  If you want to have a ring-free week and have a period, you TAKE YOUR RING OUT AFTER 3 WEEKS, HAVE A RING-FREE WEEK, AND PUT A NEW RING IN AFTER 4 WEEKS.

It doesn't matter if you don't have sex that last week - when the hormone levels drop drastically, it screws things up and you can ovulate at any time.

Good God, this isn't rocket science.
