Clicky poll: Racist or not?
In honor of Black History Month, our work cafeteria is featuring "down home favorites" every week.
Today it is featuring fried chicken.
Go.

Re: Clicky poll: Racist or not?
I think we work at the same location and based on the menu today it would vote yest.
Its has the same undertones as the KFC commercial that appeared in Australian media. If you haven't seen it I would recommend googling it because its along the same lines of stereotypes and fried chicken. KFC in the end pulled the ad b/c of public opinion and media in the US bashing them.
me too!
I say it walks the line, imo. I only say it because Fried Chicken is not a "Black" food. Its a southern food. Being that this was one of my majors in college I could sit here and write about all the historical connotations that go along with fried chicken and Black people.
There is no- Black food. That's like saying there is White food (and there isn't that either).
stepping off my soap box.
I said other...and this is why...
When it's "Fiesta Week" (or whatever...just roll with it..) they serve rice and beans and tacos. Is that racist? No. It's cultural.
Does that mean ALL hispanics eat Mexican food? Nope.
CULTURALLY speaking, African Americans have foods associated with their ethnicity...just like Chinese, Japanese, Hispanic, etc.
I personally think everyone is way too damn sensitive these days.

I'm not trying to cause a stir but I would like to know what are the foods associated with African Americans?
My family is from Alabama and my grandmother passed away at 101 and to my knowledge there was not one food that she taught my mom to cook that wasn't moreso associated with the LOCATION she lived in versus the face that we are African American. If you look on Food Network the food my grandmother cooked is moreso being displayed by a White lady named Paula Dean...does that mean she's making African American food? Or SOUL food? I'm just sayin...
All hispanics would not eat Mexican food because all Hispanics are not from Mexico or Mexican descent.
I've always wondered....what's so derogatory about associating those types of food with any ethnicity?

The thing I find funny is that the African Americans I do know completely embrace "stereotypes". For example, everyday at lunch where I used to work there would be joking about how I would never survive in their house because I don't eat _________ (insert fried chicken, greens, cornbread, etc). They would say things such as "Never trust a black man that doesn't have facial hair" or "Never believe a black man that don't like his fried chicken". They would tell me I was "so white", but I never felt as if they were being racist. I was losing weight around this time and they kept teasing me because I was losing my curves and "leaving the black market". Not a mean teasing, but more of a don't think you need to slave to be thin, you look great sort of thing. They were all really good guys and people that I still consider friends 3+ years after I stopped working there. These experiences are not limited just to this group of guys, I have seen/ heard it from others as well.
Well- I don't know they type of people you hung out with but as a Black person I don't have one Black person that I know (even after living in over 5 states and 2 countries) that would ever say that stuff.
Being from the South- I can't tell you the last time I've had any of the food you have listed and I've never made any in my life...and yes I can cook. I have a certificate in culinary arts.
I don't want to be associated with a stereotype good or bad because that is what it is a STEREOTYPE. I am a person.
I wish you all could have watched Tyra's show yesterday. It would have helped this discussion greatly.
i totally agree
I don't know that I'd necessarily call it racist, but it certainly is a bit distasteful.
When I think of food and black history month, I think of peanuts ie George Washington Carver.
People always think someone else is being too sensitive if it's not about them.
