First comes the cold...

...then comes the cold sore.  Ugh.  Any remedies that you recommend?

This morning I bought Abreva, L-Lysine 1000 mg and LypSyl (which apparently has zync, lysine, beeswax and menthol in it).

Re: First comes the cold...

  • DH gets them whenever he gets a cold.  He uses Abreva and that little tin thing of Carmex (I think that's what it's called).

  • I have a RX for some kind of topical (Abreva does nothing for me if the cold sore is already there) and if its really bad my dr will also call in a RX for Valtrex that I will take once a day until gone.
  • Not you too! I'm on cold sore day 3 right now. I don't get them when I'm sick, I get them when something happens to my lip/mouth area. I drank out of a soda can a few days ago... Also wearing too much chapstick sets them off and sometimes waxing. Anyway, my best remedy combo is putting nail polish remover on a qtip and holding it on the sore for about 10 seconds at least 3 times a day, then applying abreva. Remover stings like a MOTHER and is probably poisoning me, but without it, mine get HUGE (like quarter size)! This one is barely noticeable, but is more painful cause it's mostly inside my lip. Zovirax is a decent prescription cream, but I think my method works better for me. Are you super paranoid about spreading them to...other areas or DH? I try not to touch it unless it's with a qtip and have a separate chapstick, concealer, toothbrush just for when I have one! Also, if I have to go out, I wear a little square band-aid on it if it's big and not coverable with makeup. I'd rather look like a moron than subject others to that ghastly sight.
  • I get one in the same spot every year, and it can be huge!  I'm going to try that nail polish remover method.  I saw it online, and if it works for you, I will try it.  Have you tried ice?

I wish I had the tingly warning.  I just wake up with them.  I am trying to be very careful with everything I touch, using kleenex and q-tips.  I just hope I didn't pass it to Scarlett!  I'm pretty sure I put the handle-side of her pacifier in my mouth last night.  Keep your fingers crossed!

  • AH!  Zovirax!  That is the Rx cream I am thinking of!
  • I've never tried ice, but I know heat aggravates them. Mine are always worse in the summer. I take cooler showers and no baths whenever I have one. Also, this is totally gross & TMI, but I burst the lil blisters. The faster the thing dries out, the faster it goes away. Just have to be careful the fluid (ew) doesn't get anywhere else.

Fingers crossed for S! Don't let her share your chapstick/lipstick when she's older, I think that's how I got them from my mom at age 10 :(

  • I hate cold sores and I used to get them quite often. The best remedy for me is Abreva. I tried it for the first time two months ago and it helped right away. Another method I tried before was putting some toothpaste over it and letting it dry.
