**Finding out my baby's sex**

So, at 19 weeks I'm scheduled for my second ultra-sound tomorrow and should learn my "sweet pea's" sex! DH and I both choose to know because we are both neurotic and anxious so we can plan, etc.! And of course, from everyone to family and co-workers, people are lending their superstitions on how I'm carrying (which tends to be high), and putting in their bids for a boy, while my next door neighbors (a cute, crazy couple with no kids, but a wild kingdom of animals) are hoping for team pink for a girl.

Because I've read the accuracy of the sex-determining ultra-sounds in the second trimester still seems to have a margin of error, I'm beginning to freak out a bit if DH and I buy all blue stuff (his high hopes), and it turns out to be a girl! We both just pray for a healthy, strong baby, and so far I've had a wonderful, pregnancy with no complications.

So, I wanted to know have any of you mommies received an erroneous ultra-sound of your baby's sex, only to be shocked later on in your pregnancy, or forbid, at your deliveries? Or am I just over-reacting?

Re: **Finding out my baby's sex**

  • So excited for you Ms.Wifey. I am glad that your pregnancy is going by smoothly. Time is flying by huh? Now, am I asking for too much to see a bump pic?!?!? Stick out tongue

  • Thanks Keryln! And, I'll most definitely have to upload one this weekend. It seems each time I make DH take one, I'm not pleased with how the other bits of me fall into place! Embarrassed But, I have taken a few and planned on taking a fresh one this weekend. Stay tuned girl!
  • I can't say for sure seeing as how this baby has not yet been born - but I think the ultrasounds are pretty accurate. I think if its a boy then its really really going to be a boy, but for a girl they *could* miss it?

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling it has more to do with the ultrasound tech and the doctor's abilities at getting an accurate picture and determining the sex. I found out at 20 - 21 weeks and I think at that point its either one or the other...not a maybe.

  • Mine was accurate, but there were at least two girls on third tri with me who did find out that their girls were actually boys.  I think if they see a boy it is very unlikely that it is a girl, but a boys "parts" could be missed or tucked away I guess, and mistaken for a girl.  It is rare, but it happens.  I had several later ultra sounds so I was sure.

  • that's so exciting!

I actually know somebody that was told the whole time that she was having a boy and she had a girl.  Talk about shocked.

  • My mom was told I was a boy. They didn't find out I was a girl until I popped out, sans wiener.

All my baby stuff was blue. :-)

  • Thanks Ladies! Your stories are reassuring. That's why I'm hoping at 19 weeks, instead of 20-22 weeks they are accurate, but they insisted before I made the appointment, they would be able to determine it. But, if I have doubts, I will definitely schedule another one in a few weeks!
  • Mine was accurate and I had a girl. I really wanted a boy and I cried like a baby when I got home after the appt. I think it was all those pregnancy hormones. Later I got a 3d ultrasound and they could see the ovaries etc. So, I was pretty confident at the time of delivery. However, I am so happy that I had a girl and couldn't imagine if Ori was a boy. She has enough energy to be a boy and think I would have been outdone with a boy :) Good luck!
  • I didn't find out, but thinking back to the 200 or so moms that I shared the May birth month board with, I don't remember a single one having a day of birth "surprise"!  But, it happens.  As long as you keep that in the back of your mind as a possiblity, then all is good.

You could as pp said, go later for a 3D ultrasound to confirm. (and pay for it)
