S/O Fannie and Freddie political contributions

Since Fannie and Freddie were supported by the gov't, why were they allowed to contribute to politicians?  I still don't understand the relationship between the gov't and these companies except that FDR started Fannie.

Edit: changed are to were since I'm talking about the past.

  • Freddie/Fannie are pseudo-gov't oligopolies. They were technically privatized (they were owned by shareholders) but had a gov't backing which allowed them to be reckless, knowing the gov't would bail them out when they got in over their heads. They're called GSEs b/c they were chartered by the gov't. Fannie was at one time gov't owned and a monopoly in the secondary mortgage market. Freddie was created in the 70s as a private GSE for "competition" with Fannie. Apparently congress didn't know 2 gov't backed monoliths =/= competition.?

    Here's an article on them:

  • Thanks for answering Caden!

If they had a gov't backing, should they have been allowed to contribute to politicians?
