Garage door opener PSA

Our cars were broken into overnight, and thankfully they only took the loose change, but the went through everything in the cars.  They must have jimmied the locks to get in.  The good thing was they didn't pull the openers from the cars and open the garage, which has a ton of stuff they could have taken.  Thankfully they most likely wouldn't have gotten in the house since we have a deadbolt on the door out to the garage.  I never even thought about the openers until the officer said something.  We will be removing them each night from our cars from now on.

Re: Garage door opener PSA

  • That is good to know and really scary!
  • I think about that all the time!  You're pretty lucky that they didn't.

I am also leary of the Garmin being out in the open in the car.  If someone wanted to, they could break into the car, find where our house is located (by hitting "Home" on the Garmin) and take our garage opener and let themselves in while we aren't there.

Just something else to think about.

  • We take down our GPS, including the mount.  Actually, we usually just put the GPS on the console and skip the mount.  Luckily (ha!) for us we don't have garage door openers b/c we don't have any electric in our detached garage.

  • A good suggestion I read once was to not really enter your address as home, but rather a nearby gas station, grocery store, etc.  It will get you to the right place, but nobody would know exactly where you live if it were to get stolen.  Apparently there was a trend of stolen GPS and garage door openers, especially during football games or an event that took several hours, and then the homes would be robbed as well.

  • I take the opener with me if I park in the driveway, but I can't get DH to do this. Of course, the car's really only ever in the driveway when we're home, so hopefully no one will try to break in then...but you never know.

  • We disable the garage door from the opener on the garage wall if the cars are not in the garage.  This way we don't need to keep track of the openers from the cars.

  • Thanks for mentioning this!  I had never thought about the garage door openers.

DH is good about putting away the GPS when we go someplace but I was shocked to find out that he left it out when his car was in our driveway.  He thought it was safe in our neighborhood.  I told him you never know who's going to come along.

He had a GPS stolen out of his car when he lived in Mainstrasse (the one time he forgot and left it out) and it totally creeped me out that someone had personal information since he had downloaded pictures and addresses to it.  He hasn't done that with this one.

The policeman that came said that we are in a very safe area (which we knew when we picked where to buy our house) but things do happen like this.  I'm sure it was just kids since they only took the change (I have to laugh though that they left the pennies).  Still, gives me the heebey jeebies to think what could have happened.

  • I agree- we disable the openers when the cars are not in the garage.
