So I saw a clip of Tina Fey from the Emmy's saying she doesn't want to play "this woman" anymore and hoping she doesn't have to play "this woman" after Nov. 4th. Obviously she was talking about Palin (and it was very condescending to call her that). That bugs me. I feel like past SNL stars didn't give their politics when they were playing political figures and that made them so funny. It kind of ruins her potrayal of Palin for me because now I think she'll be poking fun of her with some kind of agenda. It makes it sort of malicious, it's not fun. I don't know what Dana Carvey's politics were but he was brilliant George H. Bush. Same with the guy who played Bill Clinton (that played McCain).
A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.

Re: SNL and politicians
Also, I thought this line was hilarious:
While Gov. Palin herself reportedly enjoyed the impersonation, John McCain advisor Carly Fiorina called Fey?s portrayal ?sexist.? So what did Tina think about that response? Apparently, not much.
?I saw one lady trying to form a thought that it was sexist on the news but she didn?t get it together, probably because she was a lady and she was dumb,? Fey said. ?Wait is that sexist??
Tina Fey's comments aren't a surprise to me. She was a pretty vocal HRC supporter off camera and on (as BM pointed out already...)
That she wouldn't support Palin or want her anywhere near the White House isn't shocking...
Although the whole exchange reminds me of when Jon Stewart was asked by some people on CNN who he wanted to win the 2004 election as to get him more "material" for The Daily Show...
I 100% agree. I guess it's selfish of me but I really resent this sort of thing in celebrities. I feel like I'm being deprived of the entertainment value, because I will always associate them with their snide comments (hi matt damon). I realize I don't have to watch, but that really does limit your options for watching television or going to a movie, let alone attending a concert. And you don't find many professions where it is so acceptable to offer your political opinions so loud and proud, and to hell with whomever you alienate. I am not so foolish as to argue against their right to do so, but I definitely feel hella alienated.
Which reminds me, I heard Toby Keith is an Obama supporter. Man we don't even have Toby anymore!
I love it and her. ?
And come on guys, you know that portrayal of Gerald Ford or GHWB wasn't that complimentary. ?These are entertainers. ?These are comedians. ?For the most part, they're a liberal bunch. And make no mistake that Will Ferrell was majorly mocking GWB. ?
Honestly, I like it when celebrities voice their opinions. ?I find it refreshing to see who thinks about something besides themselves. ?Again, it doesn't make me support who they support, it makes me support them. ?I like 30 Rock just fine, but I'll be definitely watching it now. ?I
Tina Fey.?
In fairness though, would you patronize a business for which the political causes that they promote were dramatically different than your own? I see this as essentially the same thing.
No, I wouldn't patronize a business with bad causes. ?Similarly, celebs who hold extra heinous opinions don't get supported by me.
pville - I agree with you. It kind of changes your whole perspective on their skits.
While I always knew most of the cast was liberal I don't recall them making public statements so you could just laugh at it. But once I hear a celebrity start getting political I can't help but view them differently, usually more negatively, especially when they get really derogatory in their comments.
Conservatives- doesn't this make you feel better:

"60th Emmys hit all-time ratings low"?
Oh please. If you don't like the show, don't watch it. An entertainment program such as SNL is under no obligation to play PC politics. And a comedic actress such as Tiny Fey is under no obligation to enjoy the prospect of playing Sarah Palin for the next four years. Count me as one of those Obama supporters that hated the way SNL and Tina Fey were clearly in the tank for HRC. You know what? Regardless of my antipathy towards their political affiliations, I haven't missed a single episode. Why? Because it's a funny show (well, it has highs and lows, as any avid viewer can attest to) and I enjoy it. I enjoy it even when it makes fun of my party or my paper of choice (as they did with the NYT this weekend). Frankly, I'm a little tired of the faux offense and wah-wahing I've heard emanating from conservative talking heads throughout the day. People! It's not like SNL is McNeil News Hour! Gah.
P.S. Lest any conservative forget, SNLs negative portrayal of Al Gore after the 2000 presidential debates helped crystallize certain swaths of the country against him.
P.P.S. And I still didn't miss a single episode even after SNL skewered my presidential pick in 2000. But by all means, stop watching if you don't like the fact that some actress expressed any sort displeasure at playing a conservative. Double gah.
Come on LMW, you know I don't expect or want SNL to be under some sort of fairness doctrine. I'm commenting on how hearing their political views affects how funny I think their skit is. I don't want the gov't to regulate Tina Fey.
I know. My post was more of a response to Lou Dobbs who went off on SNL today and I can't respond to him like I can to you and your post. Don't hate me. I'm a curmudgeon.
