I am going to kill my new CW (long, sorry)

We got this new girl in on 1/11 - that's less than a month, just so you know how new she is.

Right now is a really busy time for us.  I've been staying till 7 almost every night (the other nights have been after 7), along w/my old CW (we'll call her C) and my manager (S).  Newbie (L) works 8.30-5.30 with an hour lunch every day.  Actually, she stayed till 7 once when S asked her to...the rest of us were here till 8.30.  It's been bothering me that she doesn't even offer to help out when she knows we've been staying late every single night.  She has very little work to do while C and I are overloaded (granted, that's an S problem).  We've even brought in a very expensive outside consultant to help me out b/c I have so much on my plate right now.

So, last night L stayed "late" (till 5.36) and then split.  S asked me if I was going to stay (yes, I had to review the consultant's work) and what C and I wanted to order for dinner...that's a huge sign that S expects us to stay pretty late.  We ended up staying till 9.00.

This morning I come stumbling in at 8.45 and L says "Wow, you're really late today."  I just said something about having a long night...and then, I couldn't resist.  I told her that she'd missed a really good dinner (it was our fave place).  She asked how late we were here and I told her 9.00.  Her response "Oh, I'm glad I didn't stay then.  Dinner isn't worth that."  I just looked at her and said "OKAY" and walked out.  Later I was asking C if our software was down yet (it's expected at 9 this morning) and then said that I'd just try to get in - if it's down, I won't be able to.  L responds "Oh, go ahead and break (System Name)."  By this time I was sitting down in my chair, I stood up so fast when she said that that my chair hit the wall...C stopped me as I went storming into L's office.

This is just one (okay, 1 1/2) example.  She makes stupid little cracks at me all the time (gives me shiit for wearing my tennis shoes when we walked to get cake one day...gave me shiit for mentioning that I'd forgotten my sunglasses when we walked to lunch earlier this week).  And when she makes this crack, it lingers...she's still talking about the day I wore tennis shoes - 3 weeks ago.  It's obvious this chick doesn't like me (Our other CW who's on maternity leave hates me and C too...she and L went to lunch before her baby came and L's attitude changed dramatically).

WTF do I do?  One friend who's not in this group, but is close to C and I said I should talk to S.  But I'm not really sure what to say...really, it's just the fact that she's not offering to help out.  I most likely wouldn't give her any of my stuff (and I'm in a position to do so), but it'd be nice to show a little teamwork.  I can handle her not liking me and making little comments to me.  And teamwork is a HUGE thing for our group right now, thanks to the Maternity Leave CW - we have to go to "counseling" b/c of all the drama she's started in our grou (entire group, including S and the group she left a couple of years ago).

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

Re: I am going to kill my new CW (long, sorry)

  • I would absolutely talk to S (your manager).  And I personally would approach it from the angle of "Hey, I realize that L & I aren't exactly best of friends, BUT... C & I could really use some help.  I've logged XX hours this week and I cannot handle maintaining that level of dedication for an extended period of time."

If you can avoid pointing a direct finger at L for all her short comings (piss-poor attitude, lack of teamwork, superior attitude, just to name the top 3), MAYBE it might work to your advantage?

  • do you guys have mandatory hours?  We are on at least a 55 hour work week right now, goes up to 60 hours staring Monday and then 65 staring  the 22nd.

If I were you, I probably wouldn't have held back, especially when she said dinner wasn't worth it.  I would have made a backhanded comment along the lines of, it really wasn't an option, especially since others aren't doing their fair share.

In lines of what you can do now, I agree with Paula and do it in a passive manner.  Not really pointing fingers direcly but indirectly.  In the end, your manager will see how much time you are logging in and she isn't.  She'll be the one looking like a fool in a few weeks.

All businesses are about saving money right now and to me she seems like expendible, especially if you had to bring in an outside independent contractor (who like you said, charge big bucks).

  • That's part of the problem, I think...we don't actually have "mandatory hours" but it's been made very clear that we need to finish our testwork, have S review it and have the auditors buy off on it by 2/15.  It's pretty much impossible w/o working extra.

I'm sure S knows that L isn't working as much as us.  All three of us (me, C and S) all stay late every day...L's outta there.  There's no way S can't notice...but then again, she's very aware of the issues with Maternity Leave Girl (She's out for 4+ months on leave...she also pulls the same thing as L but worse...comes in late, 2 hr lunch and out by 5) but nothing's really been done besides bringing the "counselor" guy to help.

Thanks for the advice though.  I think I'm going to approach it that way.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • I would definatley go to your manager, she obviously is unhappy with herself if she feels the need to constantly pick you though.

Want me to take care of her? I could claim pregnancy hormones
