I often get into these silly conversations when someone says they have a large extended family. I am an only child so for some reason people assume I'm not from a large family. But I don't necessarily consider myself from a small family as I grew up around my extended family (which is probably why I'm an only child!).
Here's my family picture (not including DH's family).
My mom has 12 siblings and I am the 57th grandchild (meaning I have 56 cousins not including any of their spouses)! I most of my cousins also have atleast one child. My grandmother just passed away a year ago at 101.
My dad has 10 siblings and I have about 34 cousins and about 12 of them have children as well..
It made wedding planning a CHALLENGE.
What's your extended family like?
Re: What does a large extendend family mean to u?
Well I only have 4 or 5 cousins on each side (not including my two siblings). I guess I think of great aunts & uncles, second cousins, etc when I think of big extended families. DH probably has 40 cousins on his dad's side but he's not close to all of them-so maybe to him it depends on how many are close or not.
And yes, our wedding planning was difficult too b/c of all the cousins!
Wow, that's a huge family!
Mine is much smaller...dad was an only child and mom is one of four. I have 2 (just 2!) first cousins on my side.
DH's dad is one of 7 and he has probably 10-12 first cousins.
There are no grandkids at all in our immediate family yet (me/DH, my brother/SIL, DH's sister/BIL). So even if each couple were to have 2 kids (DH and I are thinking only 1), that'd be 6 grandkids total. I can't begin to imagine 57...
The Fluffy Cat says... "Boxes are the best toys ever invented!"
"instant field hands" !! Hahaha! Ain't that the truth!
I thought I came from a big family until I read all that!!! DANG! My mom's side is small. One living sister (her brother passed away when I was young. Diving accident. He never had kids). I have 3 cousins on that side. Between those cousins, there are 2 kids.
My dad's side is the largest. He has 4 siblings. I have 8 cousins on that side. Between those 8 cousins, there are 13 children.
My immediate family: I have 3 sisters. 1 niece and 1 nephew. And then, of course, my 2 children.
Seems super small compared to yours, but still big enough to make event planning crazy.

My mom's family is ridiculously large. My great grandmother had 19 children (yes, 19, only one set of twins). My grandmother and her siblings had about 60 children. By the time it gets to my generation, there are over 100. I'm the youngest of the great grandchildren, so there are at least 50 great-great grandchildren. Somehow my grandmother kept track of everyone in a family tree until she died. I really only know my mom's siblings, my first cousins, and a few second cousins, but even that is a lot of people. Family reunions as a kid were interesting though; several times I would find other kids I knew from school, ballet, soccer, etc., and we had no idea we were related!
My dad's family is much more manageable. He has four siblings, and there were eight grandchildren.
My dad had 11 brothers & sisters. So that side fo the family is even bigger, but... we're not close with them at all. Unfortunately.
I always say I have a large family, because I only have my mom's side of the family, and they are plenty.
She is one of 7, each of them is married so that's 14 aunts and uncles.
Cousins - there are 12 of us, and some of them have spouses and kids.
Phew you've got me beat, too! I consider my extended family to be pretty large but it doesn't hold a candle to your family!
My mom has 5 brothers and sisters, all of which live in Cincy except for 1 sister (in Phoenix). My dad also has 5 brothers and sisters, 3 of which live here and the other 2 in NYC (1 since deceased but all his family is still there).
I have 22 first cousins and we're all pretty close which I've always been grateful for. Now that my cousins have started families, I also have 8 first cousins once removed (ie: my cousins' kids). Many of them live in town and others we visit them when we can. Some of my best memories are playing with all my cousins at my grandparents house during holidays.
As DH and I start thinking about building our own family in the future, it makes us sad to know that it'll be relatively small. I have 2 siblings and he only has 1 so in terms of our kids having lots of cousins and aunts/uncles it won't nearly be as big. DH and I are the oldest in our respective families.
As a side note, DH is using http://www.dynastree.com to make a family tree and you can invite others to help put it together. It's pretty neat!
