Uh-oh, Second man stabbed on a Greyhound in Canada

I wonder how much business Greyhound will lose because of this??

Man stabbed aboard Greyhound bus in northern Ontario

??Police are investigating a stabbing aboard a Greyhound bus bound for Winnipeg, an incident in which a young man was attacked by another passenger as the vehicle travelled through northern Ontario.

The man who was stabbed is believed to be in his 20s. He was taken to hospital Sunday afternoon with minor injuries, the Sault Star newspaper reported.Police arrested a 28-year-old man near the town of White River, about 300 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., shortly after the bus driver let him get off at the side of the highway."I can confirm that an incident did occur aboard one of our buses," said Greyhound spokesperson Abby Wambaugh, speaking from Dallas, Texas."The incident occurred 10 miles [16 kilometres] east of White River," she said. "The bus originated in Toronto and was headed for its final destination of Winnipeg."Wambaugh said the company is "co-operating fully" with Ontario Provincial Police in the investigation.Another bus was provided for the 13 remaining passengers to continue on their trip. The incident comes less than two months after a Greyhound passenger beheaded Tim McLean, a 22-year-old man from Winnipeg, sparking questions about security on buses.Vince Weiguang Li, 40, is charged with second-degree murder and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation to see whether he is fit to stand trial. He's scheduled to appear in court Oct. 6.http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2008/09/21/greyhound-stabbing.html?ref=rss?

Re: Uh-oh, Second man stabbed on a Greyhound in Canada

  • wtf?  Note to self: never take a greyhound in Canada.

I was actually just telling a friend of mine about the original incident, remarking that I was glad she arrived safely from DC on a chinatown bus.  And she said, 'well, I feel like that's just such a freak occurrence, you can't really base your decisions around it.'  And I agreed.

    This is just weird!

I wouldn't be opposed to more security at bus stations.  Just put your weapons under the bus!

  • Crazy!  DH and I were just discussing the prior attack this weekend and agreed it was a one-time occurrence that shouldn't scare riders much (although I would be scared to go to greyhound stops in many cities at night -- sometimes shady neighborhoods.)

Isn't Canada's violent crime rate usually quite low?

  • Not to make this too political, but can you imagine if this guy had a gun instead?

I'd rather be shot than stabbed, but that's just me. ?I've heard a gun shot hurts a lot less than a stab wound plus there is less worry of infection after the fact. ?Plus, if I'm going to be horribly murdered, i'd appreciate that it be as quick and pain-free as possible.

    Agreed.

However, a gun leaves less time for other potential victims to get away, so the argument could be made that a gun would have caused a greater number of casualties.

Yeah, but there's usually only so many people you can stab at a time. If he'd had a gun, he could have potentially shot and killed half the people on the bus in the same time it took him to stab one person.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that.?

  • Wow, that is seriously messed up.

I guess the US doesn't have a monopoly on violent crime after all.
