Just saw this article on Gothamist. Some PA guy was shot while sitting in his car 10 blocks from my apt on the Upper West Side in Manhattan!!! I go to where he was shot all the time (drop off movies, get pet supplies, out to dinner, etc.). Craziness! I told FI he has to keep this from my MIL - she's a little TOO protective of him and would throw a fit!

Re: NER - WTF???
Whoa - that's not even a bad neighborhood! It's below Columbia University. wtf?
I think I'll stick to the East side...
Yikes... scary!
When I first went to college, my grandma would call my parents every time she heard about a shooting in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and verify that it wasn't near my school. She somehow missed the one that actually WAS in my neighborhood, though.
My brother got mugged a year ago by his apartment in Harlem.
My parents haven't told my grandparents... especially since he's still living there.
Wow. That is scary.
There's something really unnerving when a violent crime happens near you. We had somebody get shot literally right behind our house (if we'd been out on our deck at the time, we would have seen it). I don't think it was random - I'm pretty sure they were waiting for this particular guy, but nevertheless, it was really, really disturbing.
Of course, what's even more disturbing is that nobody from the police even came to talk to us, even though it was obvious that someone from our house could have witnessed it. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the police department...
