When can babies see you?

For those with little ones...

When did baby start to be able to recognize you. My LO looks right through me all the time, as if she can't see me at all - I read that vision isn't fully there until 6 or 8 months, but I don't know much about how it changes between birth and then.

Just wondering when my girl will start to show signs that she recognizes us and knows who we are...

Re: When can babies see you?

  • after reading your post I was curious too, so I did a google search (although you probably already did this!) by voice it looks pretty early, like soon for your darling Fiona, but a couple months still by sight!

  • They start to recognize you pretty early on but they probably "see" you as a blurry mass. I would have to go back into my book and look for when I first noticed him "realizing" who I am as I can't remember when it was. He see's pretty far though (and has for awhile). He can see me when I am in the kitchen and he is in the family room and he can follow Louie when he is on the other side of the house.
  • I think they know it's you, even though it's a blurry mass.  By about 4 weeks, she should be able to focus on your face from a distance of 8-14 inches away.  She's not seeing you clearly, but it should look like she's focusing.
  • It can be anywhere from a few days to many weeks. It depends on their eye development.

With DD, we knew she could recognize us because we got special smiles (and no one else did) - that was around 4-5 weeks.

  • There was actually a really interesting study completed recently about this thing (I'm gonna try to find it for you) and it proved that, until the age of about 9-8 months, your babes only recognize *parts* of you. They know you ear(s), you eyes, your nose...but not the entire face. As a part of the study, they digitally placed the nose of the mother on the face of another woman and the baby responded as though they "knew" the person (when shown a portion of the photo that isolated the nose, etc). They did this several different ways...sooooo interesting! Yep, now I have got to find it. I am off to search Google ;)
  • I think he recognizes us now, but just recently in the last week or so. He has known our voices since about Christmas I think, if we were in a room and Adam or I spoke you could see him look around for us (maybe it was in our heads, but we thought so!)
  • Thanks ladies!

Melodie - I'd be interested to see that study if you happen to come across it, if not no worries Smile
